Mackinaw cloth is a heavy dense water repellent wool en cloth, such as Melton Mowbray Melton cloth. It was used to make a short coat of the same name, sometimes with a doubled shoulder. These jackets have their origins on the Canadian frontier and were later made famous by American Lumberjack loggers in the upper Midwest during the mid 19th century logging boom. In Canada, the Mac is regarded as a marker of national identity and working class values, and has been exploited for effect in Canadian comedy shows such as Second City Television Bob & Doug McKenzie Second City Television and This Hour has 22 Minutes . Origin of the Mackinaw jacket The Straits of Mackinac Mackinac or Mackinaw region in present day Michigan was an important trade artery during the 18th and 19th centuries it was named after the Straits of Mackinac, which connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron . A military force at the straits could also command traffic from and to Lake Superior , which drains into the St. Marys River Michigan Ontario , which in turn empties into Lake Huron east of the straits. Although Fort Mackinac at Mackinac Island had been ceded by Kingdom of Great Britain Britain to the newly independent United States in the Treaty of Paris 1783 Treaty of Paris in 1783, the British Army refused to evacuate the posts on the Great Lakes until 1796, when the forts at Fort Detroit Detroit , Mackinac and Fort Niagara Niagara were handed over to the Americans. British and American forces would contest the area throughout the War of 1812 , and the boundary would not be settled until 1828, when Fort Drummond, a British post on nearby Drummond Island , was evacuated. Refimprove date June 2007 Madras is a lightweight cotton fabric with typically patterned texture and plaid design, used primarily for summer clothing pants, shorts, dresses and jackets. The fabric takes its name from the former English name of the city of Chennai , India . This cloth also was identified by the colloquial name, Madrasi checks. Madras today is available as plaid patterns in regular cotton, seersucker and as patchwork madras. Patchwork madras is fabric that is derived from cutting several madras plaid fabrics into strips, and sewing them back together as squares of 3 inch sizes, that form a mixed pattern of various plaids criss crossing. As a fabric, it is notable because the front and back of the fabric are indistinguishable. One style popular during the 1960s was called bleeding Madras . It used dye s that were not colorfast in a typically Tartan plaid design, resulting in bleeding and fading colors that yielded a new look to the fabric each time it was laundered. In contemporary fashion, it is used for men s shirts, women s skirts and pants, golf apparel, children s wear and for accessories. Along with Sperry Top Sider s and Lilly Pulitzer dresses, madras is a mainstay of preppy clothing. In popular culture The fabric is mentioned many times in the S.E. Hinton book The Outsiders novel The Outsiders as a favored pattern of shirts and jackets worn by the Socs. The book is set in the early 1960s, a period when Madras was particularly fashionable amongst preps . ref http www.1960sclothing.co.uk the 1960s 1960s america ref It is also mentioned several times in the song M79 by the American band Vampire Weekend . Together with other brass factories like the Eagle Pharmacy Stolberg Eagle Pharmacy or the Kupferhof Bauschenberg factory Bauschenberg it flourished for many years. As soon as the importance of the brass industry decreased the building was sold to Johann Paul Offermann , a clothier of the nearby village of Imgenbroich. For nearly 60 years the building was used for the production of cloth despite competition of the neighbouring cloth mill Krone .
