  1. Radial turbine

Cleanup date July 2007 Unreferenced section date December 2007 A radial turbine is a turbine in which the flow of the working fluid is radial to the shaft. The difference between axial and radial turbines consists in the way the air flows through the components compressor and turbine . Whereas for an axial turbine the rotor is impacted by the air flow, for a radial turbine, the flow is smoothly orientated at 90 degrees by the compressor towards the combustion chamber and driving the turbine in the same way water drives a watermill. The result is less mechanical and thermal stress which enables a radial turbine to be simpler, more robust and more efficient in a similar power range as axial turbines . When it comes to high power ranges above 5 MW the radial turbine is no longer competitive heavy and expensive rotor and the efficiency becomes similar to that of the axial turbines. Euler s Turbine Equation Euler s Turbine Equation states that W U2 U1 V2 V1 W2 W1 , where U Blade Velocity r omega omega Angular Velocity V Absolute Velocity W Relative Velocity For an axial machine, you have Zero Degree of Reaction that makes U2 U1 0. This is one reason for the fact that axial turbines have low power output. For a radial turbine, along the flowpath, Radius reduces and hence U2 U1 is not equal to zero, which proves that for similar turbines, radial turbine has higher power output. Advantages compared to axial turbines Thanks to lower thermal and mechanical stress on the turbine tips, it is possible to boost power quite significantly by increasing the turbine entry temperature increasing ... enable radial turbines to handle single stage compression and expansion. 1. Radial axle

A radial axle is an axle on a railway locomotive or carriage which has been designed to move laterally when entering a curve in order to reduce the flange and rail wear. Radial axles were widely used on carriages in the late 19th century before the adoption of bogie bogies . They were also used on the leading or trailing carrying axles of locomotives, particularly tank locomotives. The idea was first tried successfully by William Bridges Adams on the London and South Western Railway in 1863 and was known as the Adams Axle . It was subsequently taken up by other engineers, notably his namesake William Adams locomotive engineer William Adams , Locomotive Superintendent of the LSWR, who introduced a class now known as LSWR 415 class Adams Radials . Radial axles were also used in locomotives designed by Francis Webb engineer F.W. Webb of the London and North Western Railway , and by William Stroudley and R. J. 1. Radial chromatography

Radial chromatogaphy is a form of paper chromatography , a technique for separating colored substances from their mixtures. Here the solvent travels from the center of the circular chromatography paper towards the periphery. The entire system is kept in a covered petri dish in order to develop a chromatogram. The wick at the center of paper dips into mobile phase in a petridish by which the solvent drains on to the paper and moves the sample radially to form the sample spots of different compounds as concentric rings. 1. Radial (radio)

Unreferenced date December 2009 In RF engineering , radial has two different meanings, both referring to lines which radiate from or intersect at a radio antenna . Planning In the field of planning, radials are evenly spaced point s vector geometric vector s along evenly spaced line s bearing navigation bearing s from a common point on a map , which are used to determine the average elevation above mean sea level AMSL within a radio station s broadcast range including broadcast station s and cellphone base station s, among others . This in turn determines the station s height above average terrain HAAT , which greatly affects its coverage area more so than effective radiated power , and therefore the potential for RF interference with other adjacent stations or cells. This information must be submitted with an application for a construction permit . The points used for calculation may differ if a directional antenna is used. Grounding Stations at low frequencies like shortwave , and especially the mediumwave longwave AM broadcasting bands, require electrical ground ground ing or earthing wires to be buried in the soil in a radial pattern, in order to have a proper ground plane for the large mast radiator s used as radio antenna s at their long wavelength s. These wires are also called radials, ground radials , grounding radials , or earthing radials . All metal objects within the near field of the radiator must also be tied to this system, or they will be energized with radio frequency energy , and become an electric shock hazard, as well as potentially affecting or distorting the antenna pattern as a parasitic radiator . In one unusual case, the strip mall built around the WSB AM WSB AM tower near Atlanta, Georgia Atlanta has every metal object such as plumbing and duct work grounded for this reason. 1. Radial immunodiffusion

Radial immunodiffusion or Mancini method, Mancini immunodiffusion, single radial immunodiffusion assay is an immunodiffusion technique used in immunology to determine the quantity of an antigen by measuring the diameters of circles of precipitin precipitin complexes surrounding samples of the antigen that mark the boundary between the antigen and an antibody suspended in a medium, such as an agar gel . The diameters of the circles increase with time as the antigen diffuses into the medium, reacts with the antibody, and forms insoluble precipitin complexes. Antigen antibody complexes are small and soluble when in antigen excess. Therefore, precipitation near the center of the circle is usually less dense than it is near the circle s outer edge, where antigen is less concentrated. The quantity and concentration of insoluble antigen antibody complexes at the outer edge of the circle increases with time. Therefore, the clarity and density of the outer edge increases with time. Expansion of the circle reaches an end point and stops when antigen and antibody reach equivalence. However, the clarity and density of the outer edge may continue to increase after the circle stops expanding. For most antigens, the area and the square of the diameter of the circle at the circle s end point are directly proportional to the quantity of antigen and are inversely proportional to the concentration of antibody. Therefore, a graph that compares the quantities or concentrations of antigen in the original samples with the areas or the squares of the diameters of the precipitin circles on linear scales will usually be a straight line when all circles have reached their end points. 1. Distributing artery

Distributing arteries or muscular arteries are medium sized arteries that draw blood from an elastic artery and branch into resistance vessels including small arteries and arterioles . In contrast to the mechanism elastic arteries use to store energy generated by the heart s contraction, distributing arteries contain layers of smooth muscle . Under the microscope distributing arteries can be identified by their clearly defined internal elastic lamina . In constricted vessels the elastic lamina of distributing arteries appears thick and kinky. The elastic lamina is best visualized using Verhoeff s stain , but can be easily detected in specimens stained using other techniques as a well defined negative staining region. Examples of distributing arteries include the radial artery and the splenic artery . References Norrander, J.M., Kirkpatrick C., Bauer, G.E., Porter, M.E., Marker, P.C., Linck, R.W., et al. 2008 .
