    Digital radiography is a form of X ray imaging , where digital X ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional radiography. Instead of X ray film, digital radiography uses a digital image capture device. It is primarily used in scientific investigations. History The neutron was discovered by James Chadwick in 1932. The first demonstration of neutron radiography was made by Hartmut Kallmann and E. Kuhn in the late 1930s they discovered that upon bombardment with neutrons, some materials emitted radiation that could expose a photographic film. The discovery remained a curiosity until 1946 when low quality radiographs were made by Peters. The first neutron radiographs of reasonable quality were made by J. Thewlis UK in 1955. Around 1960, Harold Berger US and John Barton UK began evaluating neutrons for investigating irradiated reactor fuel. Subsequently, a number of research facilities were developed. The first commercial facilities came on line in the late 1960s, mostly in the US and France , and eventually in many other countries including Canada , Japan , South Africa , Germany , and Switzerland . Neutron imaging Neutron imaging is the process of making an image with neutrons. The resulting image is based on the neutron attenuation properties of the imaged object, and these attenuation properties distinguish neutron and X ray images.     This is a seminal publication of the Faculty of General Dental Practice Faculty of General Dental Practice UK of the Royal College of Surgeons of England . The publication marked the standardisation of dental radiography and now provides the dental profession with a set of evidence based medicine evidence based criteria in order to minimse radiation exposure to dental patients and staff. Key recommendations were in the area of bitewing radiography where intervals between bitewing Screening medicine screening radiographs checking for dental caries between teeth were recommended based on patient risk of disease. The patient is considered to be either High, medium or low risk of dental decay. The interval between bitewings is recommended to be either 6, 12 or 18 months plus accordingly. The effect of this has been to ensure that via a process of clinical governance and clinical audit , the number of radiation exposures to patients is minimised, while allowing clinical decisions to be made based on good radiographs, improving patient outcomes. The second edition of Selection Criteria for Dental Radiography has been fully revised and updated. Several sections have been updated in light of new evidence and research findings while others, such as the use of digital radiography, have been expanded to reflect an increasing use in general dental practice.     unreferenced date June 2010 Automatic Exposure Control AEC is an X ray exposure termination device. A Projectional radiography medical radiography x ray exposure is always initiated by a human operator. X ray termination is done by the same human operator or an exposure control device such as an electronic timer or an AEC device, which ever comes first. The intention of the AEC termination device is to provide consistent x ray film appearance. Operation An AEC system uses a physically thin radiation ionization detector AEC detector which is positioned between the patient being x rayed and the x ray film cassette. X rays passing through the patient also pass through this AEC detector before they strike the x ray film. A weak ionization signal from the AEC detector is integrated as a ramp shaped voltage waveform . This ramp signal rises until it matches a pre set threshold. At this point the x ray exposure is terminated. AEC devices are calibrated to match good x ray film appearance. Advantages Because patients vary in size and shape, an AEC device is very useful in achieving good consistent x ray film results compared to non AEC x ray exposures.
