Two days later, Benjamin Forsyth , a major in the United States Rifle Regiment , left Ogdensburg at 22 00 hours at the head of about 200 regulars and volunteers. He marched to Morristown village , New York Morristown, New York , twelve miles 19 km up the river, crossed over at 1 00 hours and took Elizabethtown by surprise. He freed the American prisoners from the Elizabethtown jail and took 52 British prisoners at a cost of one man wounded on each side and a 28 mile 45 km march in the bitter cold. The village was an important forwarding point for supplies moving up the St. Lawrence River from Montreal to Kingston, Ontario Kingston and was garrisoned by a detachment of the 2nd Leeds Militia under Colonel Joel Stone . After a spirited resistance, Colonel Stone withdrew his force comprising two subalterns and about forty soldiers, and the Americans seized the stores and burned the government depot. As a result of this raid, a Gananoque Blockhouse blockhouse was begun in Gananoque the following month and completed in 1813. The actual number of American riflemen was closer to 100. British and Canadian sources indicate that there were around 60 militia defending the outpost. On June 21, 1752, the Miami tribe Miami Indian village of Pickawillany was attacked by 240 France French allied Ottawa tribe Ottawa and Ojibwa Indians led by the M tis people Canada m tis Coureur des bois coureur de bois Charles Michel de Langlade . The purpose was to drive British traders out of the Ohio Country and to punish Miami Chief Old Briton for rejecting the French alliance and dealing with the British. The raid resulted in the deaths of at least one English trader and Old Briton. The French and Indians burned the English stockade and storehouse and sent the remaining traders fleeing back East. Following the attack, the site was abandoned and never rebuilt. The village of Pickawillany was located near what is today the city of Piqua, Ohio .
