  1. Bivouac (ants)

A bivouac is a structure formed by migratory army ant and driver ant colonies, where a nest is constructed out of the living ant worker s own bodies to protect the queen and larva e, and is later deconstructed as the ants move on. ref William B. Jackson 1957 Microclimatic Patterns in the Army Ant Bivouac. Ecology 38 2 276 285 ref ref T. C. Schneirla, Robert Z. Brown and Frances C. Brown 1954 The Bivouac or Temporary Nest as an Adaptive Factor in Certain Terrestrial Species of Army Ants. Ecological Monographs 24 3 269 296 ref Army ants can forage and feed on insects over large areas of more than 1,800 square yards in a single day, so they must constantly move to new areas. During what is called the migratory phase, the ants set up bivouacs at new sites each night. As many as 150,000 to 700,000 worker bodies cover and protect the queen, linking legs and bodies in a mass that measures a metre across. Thousands of larvae are located near the center with the queen, and workers are responsible for feeding them. Larger workers also serve as porters, carrying larvae to new bivouacs. In the morning, the bivouac dissolves into raiding columns that form a fan shaped front. These raiding columns can travel up to 20 meters per hour with lead workers laying a chemical trail for other workers to follow. Smaller workers lead the column, while larger, formidable soldiers protect the flanks. References reflist ant stub Category Myrmecology de Biwaknest ...   more details

  1. 1899 in Afghanistan

NOTOC See also 1898 in Afghanistan , 1899 other events of 1899 , and 1900 in Afghanistan . Not for many years has Afghanistan been less disturbed than this year. Few tribal risings occur and the amir Abdor Rahman continues to express friendly relations with Britain. Yet there is a disquieting rumour that Russia is preparing to advance on Herat in certain eventualities, and that an experimental mobilization of Russian troops from Tiflis to Kushk some sixty miles from Herat was made at the close of the year. The amir keeps up a friendly correspondence with the viceroy , George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston Lord Curzon , during the year, and the relations between Afghanistan and the Indian government were never more cordial. February 1899 Several small disturbances are created along the frontier by marauding bands of Waziris and Mahsud s, which are easily suppressed by the local militia without aid from regular troops. March 1, 1899 Capt. George Roos Keppel makes a sudden attack on a predatory band of Chamkanni s that have been raiding in the Kurram Valley and captures 100 prisoners with 3,000 head of cattle. These raids, though tiresome, are, however, of no political importance. May 1899 In consequence of repeated outrages committed by the Waziris, and especially because of the murder of Col. E.H. le Marchant of the Royal Hampshire Regiment Hampshire Regiment , the Indian government orders the partial disarmament of the Peshawar division, and of all trans border Pashtun people Pashtun s at the frontier, and the disarmament of all persons without licenses in all municipalities and cantonments within the division. July 1899 In spite of punitive measures the Waziri robbers continue their lawless attacks, chiefly with a view to cattle raiding. December 1899 In accordance with the frontier policy of the viceroy all regular troops are withdrawn from the Khyber Pass to Peshawar, leaving the forts and posts in the pass to be guarded by the Khyber Rifles . ...   more details

The operation an amphibious landing at Termoli on the Adriatic coast of Italy was carried out on 3 October 1943 by elements of the 2nd Special Service Brigade , No. 2 Commando and No. 40 Royal Marine Commando . In the early hours of 3 October 1943, Nos 2 and 40 Royal Marine Commandos elements of the Special Raiding Squadron landed behind the German lines under cover of darkness at Termoli, a seaport town on the Adriatic coast, north of the Bifurno River , 40 Commando penetrated well into the town before the Germans were alerted and brisk close quarter fighting with Fallschirmj ger German parachute troops ensued. By 08 00 hours, 40 Commando had captured the town and controlled the approaches. So complete was the surprise that German vehicles and motor cyclists still drove into a Commando ambush position until noon. The Germans counter attacked in strength and 2 Commando with 40 Commando, the Special Raiding Squadron and some reinforcements from the 78th Infantry Division United Kingdom 78th Division , held off repeated and heavy infantry and armoured counter attacks by the 26th Panzer Division until eventually the Eighth Army United Kingdom 8th Army linked up with them on 6 October. The operation was an outstanding success. They had overcome all attempts, by a force vastly superior in numbers and armament, to dislodge them and in so doing, won a valuable harbour they caused the enemy to withdraw from the natural defence line on the Bifurno and denied them the use of the important lateral road from Naples , thereby forcing them to retreat further northwards. ref cite web accessdate 15 June 2010 publisher Royal Marines title Battle of Termilo url http www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk reference FS dates unit hist.htm termoli ref References Reflist British Commando raids of the Second World War coord missing Italy Category Conflicts in 1943 Category World War II British Commando ra ...   more details
