The Raker Act was an act of the United States Congress that permitted building of the O Shaughnessy Dam and flooding of Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park , California . It is named for John E. Raker , its chief sponsor. The Act, passed by United States Congress Congress in 1913 by the Woodrow Wilson Wilson Administration , specified that because the source of the water and power was on public land, no private profit could be derived from the development. The plan for damming the valley was fought for years by John Muir . Construction of the dam was finished in 1923. The San Francisco Bay Guardian claims that San Francisco sold the power to PG&E , who then resold it back to the public at a profit, in violation of the act. ref cite news url http www.sfbg.com PDFs politics Chronology.pdf title Power Struggle last Redmond first Tim work San Francisco Bay Guardian ref Harold L. They are not to be confused with the gill filament s that compose the bony part of the gill. Rakers are usually present in two rows, projecting from both the anterior and posterior side of each gill arch. Rakers are widely varied in number, spacing, and form. By preventing food particles from exiting the spaces between the gill arches, they enable the retention of food particles in filter feeders. ref http 203.250.122.194 lecture anatomy htmanat2 anat14.htm ref The structure and spacing of gill rakers in fish determines the size of food particles trapped, and correlates with feeding behavior. Fish with densely spaced, elongated, comb like gill rakers are efficient at filtering tiny prey, whereas carnivores and omnivores often have more widely spaced gill rakers with secondary projections. Because gill raker characters often vary between closely related taxa, they are commonly used in the classification and identification of fish species. Much of the variation in gill raker morphology is thought to be due to adaptation to optimize the consumption of different diets. In order to prevent the potentially damaging passage of solid material through the gill slits and over the gill filaments, early gill rakers strained large particles from the water and diverted them to the esophagus . Since an appreciable fraction of this material was nutritious, rakers subsequently evolved as food trapping mechanisms in filter feeders. Gill rakers, when long and closely set, play the same role in filt ... more details

Multiple issues unreferenced August 2009 expert subject January 2009 disputed January 2009 Gill slits are individual openings to gills , i.e., multiple gill arches, which lack a single outer cover. Such gills are characteristic of Cartilaginous fish such as shark s, Batoidea rays , sawfish , and guitarfish . Most of these have five pairs, but a few species have 6 or 7 pairs. The anterior edge of a gill slit is motile, moving outward to allow water to exit, but closing to prevent reverse flow. In contrast, Bony fishes have a single outer bony gill covering called an Operculum fish operculum . The term gill slits has also been used to refer to the folds of skin in the pharyngeal region in embryos. The true gill slits in embryonic fish develop into gills. However, the slits in vertebrate do not, so a better modifier for the vertebral structures is pharyngeal , as in pharyngeal slits and pharyngeal arches. In the 19th century, pharyngeal slits of vertebrate embryos were erroneously thought to be actual gills or precursor slits to gills, so thought then to be support for the recapitulation theory . These pharyngeal arch s exist in all vertebrates at some time in their embryo stage in mammal s, bird s, and reptile s , and develop into a number of permanent structures in and away from the throat area and the bones in the ear. When the vertebrate reaches a certain point in its life the arches fuse together and form other structures such as the trachea and ear bones, and contribute to major blood vessels. Despite evidence to the contrary some books on evolution still use the supposed gill slits as evidence for evolution. In South Africa in their grade 12 text books this error still appears as evidence that mammal embryo s go through a fish like stage.
