They were vaudeville stars and made appearances in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1918, 1919, 1920 and 1921. They made numerous gramophone record phonograph records for the Emerson Records Emerson , Victor Talking Machine Company Victor , and Columbia Records Columbia record companies. With Schenck on piano, the duo sang and performed comedy routines. Van was especially adept at dialect humor, and could imitate any number of regional and continental accents. One of the team s typical novelty hits was Pastafazoola , in praise of Italian food and sung in the appropriate style. Van s hearty baritone and Schenck s high tenor harmonized well, and the team became known as the pennant winning battery of songland. They performed on radio shows and appeared in early talking motion pictures, including several musical shorts in both Vitaphone and Movietone sound system MGM Movietone and one feature, the MGM film They Learned About Women 1930 . During the first world war, they recorded humorous songs such as I Don t Want to Get Well which told the tale of a wounded soldier who did not want to recover, as he was comfortable in hospital and in love with a nurse. After Schenck s death, Van continued to perform as a solo artist on stage, screen, and radio. He appeared in many New York produced Soundies in 1941. NSV was developed by Nullsoft , the makers of Winamp . The NSV format is another example of streaming video formats, offered by various companies and media players. Windows Media , QuickTime video, RealAudio and RealVideo streams are just a few examples of these, and each have their benefits and shortcomings. One of the shortfalls of most streaming formats often comes from the difficulty in finding streams, or at least some form of directory service and in some cases, none are readily available to the public at all. With Nullsoft s SHOUTcast service, a media streaming and directory system, the NSV format has become popular, along with SHOUTcast s listings of Streaming Audio, which reach well into the thousands. The Media Library offers integrated listings of both audio and video streams, returned directly from the SHOUTcast service. History NSV was created in late 2002 early 2003 by Justin Frankel while working at Nullsoft . Vector sum excited linear prediction VSELP is a speech coding method used in several cellular standards. The VSELP algorithm is an analysis by synthesis coding technique and belongs to the class of speech coding algorithms known as CELP Code Excited Linear Prediction . ref ETSI, http webapp.etsi.org workprogram Report WorkItem.asp?WKI ID 10142 EN 300 969 Half rate speech transcoding GSM 06.20 version 8.0.1 Release 1999 , Retrieved on 2009 07 11 ref Variations of this codec have been used in several 2G cellular telephony standards, including IS 54 , IS 136 D AMPS , GSM Half Rate speech and Integrated Digital Enhanced Network iDEN . It was also used in the first version of RealAudio for audio over the Internet . The IS 54 VSELP standard was published by the Telecommunications Industry Association in 1989. D AMPS IS 54 and IS 136 VSELP specifies an encoding of each 20 millisecond ms of speech into 159 bit frames, thus achieving a raw data rate of 7.95 kbit s. In an actual TDMA cell phone, the vocoder output is packaged with error correction and signaling information, resulting in an over the air data rate of 16.2 kbit s. For internet audio, each 159 bit frame is stored in 20 bytes, leaving 1 bit unused. The resulting file thus has a data rate of exactly 8 kbit s. GSM half rate VSELP GSM 06.20 uses 20 ms frames with 112 bits per frame, giving a raw data rate of 5.6 kbit s. The iDEN VSELP coder has three modes 30 ms frames at 126 bits per frame with a raw data rate of 4.2 kbit s, 22.5 ms frames at 99 bits per frame with a raw data rate of 4.4 kbit s and 22.5 ms frames at 180 bits per frame with a raw data rate of 8.0 kbit s. A major drawback of VSELP is its limited ability to encode non speech sounds, so that it performs poorly when encoding speech in the presence of background noise. For this reason, use of VSELP has been gradually phased out in favor of newer codecs. VSELP is also the encoding method used in some early Motorola Type II trunking systems. This software attracted the attention of Chris Eddy, who had developed a technique for processing Discrete cosine transform discrete cosine transforms DCT efficiently through software. Eddy s technique helped create the first Xing MPEG video player, a very simple MS DOS application that could play back an I frame only video MPEG stream encoded at a constant Quantization image processing quantization level at 160x120 resolution. Over the next several years, Xing expanded in several directions Microsoft Windows Windows support for the XingMPEG player, a software MPEG audio decoder, a real time Industry Standard Architecture ISA 160x120 MPEG capture board XingIt , a JPEG management system Picture Prowler and finally networking. Xing released a handful of network products before StreamWorks, the first streaming audio and video system for the Internet , with support for both live and pre encoded sources. RealVideo appeared just before StreamWorks, but at the time it was known as RealAudio and could only broadcast audio. It could not transmit video. After StreamWorks was launched the company raised 5M in venture capital, but RealNetworks raised considerably more and began to out execute Xing. Despite that Xing experienced a period of expansion through its Audio Catalyst MP3 software and MP3 Grabber . Xing was bought by RealNetworks in 1999. References Reflist Bert J.
