This was based on the observation that many people with apparently comparable intersex conditions raised either male or female developed a gender identity consistent with their sex of rearing regardless of Sexual differentiation Chromosomal sex differences genetic , Sexual differentiation Hormonal differentiation hormonal , and Sexual differentiation Internal genital differentiation anatomic characteristics . This view was politically supported by the feminism feminist ideological view that most psychological sexual differentiation sex differences resulted from cultural differences in the rearing of boys and girls. 1. Queen mandibular pheromone

Refimprove date July 2008 Queen Mandibular Pheromone , or QMP , is a honey bee pheromone produced by the queen and fed to her attendants who share it with the rest of the colony that gives the colony the sense of being queenright. Chemically QMP is very diverse with at least 17 major components and other minor ones. 5 of these compounds are 9 ox 2 decenoic acid 9ODA cis & trans 9 hydroxydec 2 enoic acid 9HDA methyl p hydroxybenzoate HOB and 4 hydroxy 3 methoxyphenylethanol HVA . Newly emerged queens produce very little of this. By the sixth day they are producing enough to attract drones for mating. A laying queen makes twice that amount. QMP is responsible for inhibition of rearing replacement queens, attraction of drones for mating, stabilizing and organizing a swarm around the queen, attracting a retinue of attendants, stimulating foraging and brood rearing, and the general morale of the colony. Lack of it also seems to attract robber bees. Category Beekeeping bee stub ...   more details

  1. Winter cluster

In beekeeping , a winter cluster is a well defined cluster of honey bee s that forms inside a Beehive beekeeping beehive when the air temperature dips below 54 to 57 F 12 to 14 C . Honey bees are but a few insects that survive the winter as a hive. As the outside air temperature decreases the winter cluster becomes tighter and more compact. The bees cling tightly together on the Honeycomb combs in the hive. The temperature within the winter cluster remains remarkably warm regardless of the outside air temperature. Larger clusters basketball size have a better chance for survival than smaller clusters softball size . The winter cluster within the hive must move throughout the winter to reach the available honey stored in the combs. Some die off is expected during the winter. In extended cold weather periods, the incidence of Diseases of the honey bee Nosema Nosema disease increases and the cluster may weaken as many bees begin dying off. Brood honey bee Brood nest In subtropical climates, bees may not form a winter cluster at all. Worker bee s forage and queen bee queens lay eggs almost year round. In the temperate zones, winter temperatures dip below 54 F 12 C for extended periods. All brood rearing stops for some period during the winter. In early spring, brood rearing resumes inside the winter cluster when the queens starts to lay eggs again. Once a broodnest is established, the cluster must maintain a steady temperature between 94.1 to 98.0 F 34.5 36.7 C inside the cluster. If the temperature in areas of the brood nest dips too low the brood dies also called Diseases of the honey bee Chilled brood chilled brood . References Basil Furgala. 1975. 1. Feeder (beekeeping)

unreferenced article date June 2009 Feeders are used to provide or supplement nutrient s for a Beehive beekeeping beehive . A feeder in beekeeping can be several different things. Pollen feeder Pollen can be fed from outside or inside the hive. When pollen or a pollen supplement is fed it can be fed as a powder, granules or in pattie form. Pollen feeders are usually used at the beginning of the brood rearing season. Syrup feeder Sugary syrup, which can be HFCS or dissolved table sugar , can be fed from outside the hive or inside the hive. When syrup is fed outside the hive the usual arrangement is a 5gal bucket filled with syrup and a floating perch. In the absence of a float, many bees will drown in the sugary solution. Inside the hive, syrup feeders are either hanging like frames or put on top of the hive, so called hive top feeders. Hive top feeders can be a specially designed hive boxes or an inverted bucket with a screened hole. Syrup feeders with a 2 1 concentration of water and sugar by weight are typically used in the fall after the last honey is removed. At the beginning of the brood rearing season in the late winter or spring a 1 1 concentration of water and sugar is typically used. Use and disuse The use of feeders by the bees stops when it either gets too cold or the bees collect other food sources. To avoid contaminating honey with sugar syrup, bees should not be fed syrup when the honey super s are on. No truly effective or reliable management options currently exist. Growers routinely make 3 5 applications of insecticides each year to control this insect. The cost is United States dollar 200 500 acre . Considering the narrow profit margin for today s farmers, these costs are significant. The research being conducted at the Entomology Research Laboratory represents the first step towards developing insect killing fungi for management of TPB. Actions taken At the University of Vermont Entomology Laboratory, several proactive steps to eliminate this pest have been taken such as Rearing. A simple method for rearing large numbers of even aged TPB is used to produce hundreds of insects for testing every week. Bioassay procedures. A rapid, reliable and reproducible method to test entomopathogenic fungi for pathogenicity against TPB was developed and tested. Pathogenicity testing. Entomopathogenic fungi from our bank of isolates and from the USDA, ARSEF collection at Cornell University have been screened against 2nd instar TPB. An immersion method is used and mortality data taken periodically. Greenhouse pilot testing. Plans are underway to conduct trials in a greenhouse, and small field plots, to test the efficacy of several formulated, highly pathogenic insect killing fungi against TPB on lettuce. 1. Jenter kit

Image jenter16.jpg 300px right thumb A Karl Jenter kit, set up and ready for Queen egg laying. A Jenter kit or Karl Jenter kit is a piece of equipment used by beekeepers to raise large numbers of Queen bee queen honeybees . Rival techniques for rearing queen bees generally require grafting the honeybee larva e by hand. As such, the development of this kit by Karl Jenter is a significantly useful tool to assist in beekeeping . Application Beekeepers once had to graft the honeybee larvae by hand, in some cases by using tools such as tweezers. This fiddly approach would frequently result in the damaging of the larva thus halting the development into a queen bee. The Jenter kit uses a system of plastic cups or cells in which a queen bee can lay her eggs. The cells containing the eggs can then be removed from the laying box and placed into an isolated box for larval development with no direct handling of the larvae. As the first queen bee to hatch will kill rival hatchlings, the eggs are covered with a small plastic cage. This prevents a newly hatched queen from approaching the other eggs, and thus harming them. This allows a beekeeper to return to the hive to find a large number of newly hatched queen bees. Within 30 days, it is possible to rear as many as 50 queens using a single Jenter kit. Usage In modern times, the Jenter kit is in use by the majority of Western European and North American apiarist s. The kit allows for Queen bees to be produced commercially to supply other beekeepers, or a beekeeper may increase their number of beehive hives . Both uses have become increasingly important as a mechanism to maintain large numbers of bee colonies worldwide in the fight against Varroa Varroa mites and Colony Collapse Disorder .
