  1. Rice-hull bagwall construction

Rice hull bagwall construction is a system of building , with results aesthetic ally similar to the use of Earthbag construction earthbag or Cob building cob construction, in which woven polypropylene bags or tubes are tightly filled with raw rice hulls, and these are stacked up, layer upon layer, with strands of four pronged barbed wire between, within a surrounding cage composed of mats of welded or chicken wire woven steel mesh remesh or poultry wire on both sides wired together between bag layers with, for example, rebar tie wire and then stucco ed, to form building walls. Advantages compared to earth bag or cob include less weight to handle process, far better insulation values around 3 4 per inch , use of an agricultural waste product and the sequestration of carbon dioxide CO sub 2 sub . This building approach was originally innovated and tested by Don Stephens, in the northwestern U.S. in 2005. 1. Spar and membrane structure

Notability date September 2009 One source date September 2009 Spar and Membrane Structure SMS is a type of wall construction in which lightly reinforced 2 3 5  cm 8  cm of shotcrete or gunite skins membranes are interconnected with extended X shaped light rebar spars through the interior of the wall. Typically, SMS construction uses straw bales as leave in formwork for the concrete skins with the spars placed at the head of each bale, however, many other types of formwork could be used in place of straw bales. The SMS system was invented and patented by R. 1. Slipform stonemasonry

Slipform stone masonry is a method for making a reinforced concrete wall with stone facing in which stones and mortar are built up in courses within reusable slipform s. It is a cross between traditional mortared stone wall and a veneered stone wall. Short forms, up to 60  cm high, are placed on both sides of the wall to serve as a guide for the stone work. The stones are placed inside the forms with the good faces against the form work. Concrete is poured in behind the rocks. Rebar is added for strength, to make a wall that is approximately half reinforced concrete and half stonework . The wall can be faced with stone on one side or both sides. After the concrete sets enough to hold the wall together, the forms are slipped up to pour the next level. With slipforms it is easy for a novice to build free standing stone walls. ref Elpel, Thomas J. http www.grannysstore.com Do It Yourself stone masonry.htm Stone Masonry Construction A Brief Overview , Accessed August 19, 2011. ref Image Slipformstone construction.gif frame none Slipform stone with rebar ready for concrete History Slipform stone masonry was developed by New York architect Ernest Flagg in 1920. Flagg built a vertical framework as tall as the wall, then inserted 2x6 or 2x8 planks as forms to guide the stonework. When the masonry work reached the top of a plank, Flagg inserted another one, adding more planks until he reached the top of the wall. Helen and Scott Nearing modified the technique in Vermont in the 1930s, using slipforms that were slipped up the wall. ref Elpel, Thomas J. Concrete File Betonrot Hippodroom.JPG thumb right 300px Carbonatation induced rebar corrosion Carbonatation is a slow process that occurs in concrete where Lime material lime calcium hydroxide in the cement reacts with carbon dioxide from the air and forms calcium carbonate. The water in the pores of Portland cement concrete is normally alkaline with a pH in the range of 12.5 to 13.5. This highly alkaline environment is one in which the steel rebar is passivated and is protected from corrosion. According to the Pourbaix diagram for iron, the metal is passive when the pH is above 9.5. ref cite web url http www.corrosion doctors.org Thermo ironE pH.htm title Pourbaix diagram of iron publisher Corrosion doctors.org date accessdate 2009 10 14 ref The carbon dioxide in the air reacts with the alkali in the cement and makes the pore water more acidic, thus lowering the pH. Carbon dioxide will start to carbonatate the cement in the concrete from the moment the object is made. This carbonatation process will start at the surface, then slowly move deeper and deeper into the concrete. The rate of carbonatation is dependent on the relative humidity of the concrete a 50 relative humidity being optimal. If the object is cracked, the carbon dioxide in the air will be better able to penetrate into the concrete. Eventually this may lead to corrosion of the rebar and damage to the construction. Since its construction, it has become a landmark and a symbol for the city. The building is unique due to its very futuristic design, resembling a landed flying saucer . It was designed by architect Louis Christiaan Kalff , while the exhibition was conceived by James Gardner. The building was based on an idea by Frits Philips , who originally made a sketch of the building on a paper napkin. Frits Philips wanted to give the people of Eindhoven a beautiful and educational gift to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the company that bears his family name. After several years of losing money, the original museum closed down in 1989 and the Evoluon was converted into a conference center, opening in 1998. Founded in 1914 as a currency trader, H&J moved into steel after the Second World War . H&J came close to bankruptcy in the economic downturn of early 1980s, when it slimmed down from around 100 employees to about 30. After failed takeover negotiations with another London trader, Amari, H&J s October 1982 move to 99 Kensington High Street 4th floor coincided with a revival in its fortunes as UK and international demand for steel improved through the 1980s. After the failed takeover, H&J began specializing in importing steel to the UK from Eastern Europe , and to a lesser extent, Latin America and Western Europe . It was also active in the international bulk trade. The company was owned by Gerald Panchaud, former owner of the Mar Lodge Estate in Scotland . He sold out to the H&J management in 1988, during which H&J s working capital shrank from 2 million to 500,000. In 1989, two particular trades heralded the onset of the early 1990s recession. First, a cargo of rebar from shipped from Argentina to the UK suddenly became hard to sell, and second, a cargo of Indian steel won by tender and shipped to the USA was similarly becalmed by falling demand.
