  1. Stanley's reciprocity theorem

In combinatorics combinatorial mathematics , Stanley s reciprocity theorem , named after MIT mathematician Richard P. Stanley , states that a certain functional equation is satisfied by the generating function of any rational cone defined below and the generating function of the cone s interior. A rational cone is the set of all d tuple s a sub 1 sub , ..., a sub d sub of nonnegative integer s satisfying a system of inequalities math M left begin matrix a 1 vdots a d end matrix right geq left begin matrix 0 vdots 0 end matrix right math where M is a matrix of integers. A d tuple satisfying the corresponding strict inequalities, i.e., with rather than , is in the interior of the cone. The generating function of such a cone is math F x 1, dots,x d sum a 1, dots,a d in rm cone x 1 a 1 cdots x d a d . math The generating function F sub int sub x sub 1 sub , ..., x sub d sub of the interior of the cone is defined in the same way, but one sums over d tuples in the interior rather than in the whole cone. It can be shown that these are rational function s. Stanley s reciprocity theorem states that math F 1 x 1, dots,1 x d 1 d F rm int x 1, dots,x d . math Matthias Beck , Mike Develin , and Sinai Robins have shown how to prove this by using the methods of contour integration calculus of residues . Develin has said that this amounts to proving the result without doing any work . fact date March 2010 References R.P. 1. Scholz's reciprocity law

In mathematics, Scholz s reciprocity law is a reciprocity law for quadratic residue symbols of real quadratic number fields discovered by harvs txt first Theodor last Sch nemann authorlink Theodor Sch nemann year 1839 and rediscovered by harvs txt first Arnold last Scholz authorlink Arnold Scholz year 1929 . Statement Suppose that p and q are rational primes congruent to 1 mod 4 such that the Legendre symbol p q is 1. Then the ideal p factorizes in the ring of integers of Q q as p and similarly q inthe ring of integers of Q p . Write sub p sub and sub q sub for the fundamental units in these quadratic fields. 1. Weil reciprocity law

In mathematics , the Weil reciprocity law is a result of Andr Weil holding in the function field of an algebraic variety function field K C of an algebraic curve C over an algebraically closed field K . Given functions f and g in K C , i.e. rational functions on C , then f g g f where the notation has this meaning h is the divisor algebraic geometry divisor of the function h , or in other words the formal sum of its zeroes and poles counted with multiplicity and a function applied to a formal sum means the product with multiplicities, poles counting as a negative multiplicity of the values of the function at the points of the divisor. With this definition there must be the side condition, that the divisors of f and g have disjoint support which can be removed . In the case of the projective line , this can be proved by manipulations with the resultant of polynomials. To remove the condition of disjoint support, for each point P on C a local symbol f , g sub P sub is defined, in such a way that the statement given is equivalent to saying that the product over all P of the local symbols is 1. When f and g both take the values 0 or &infin at P , the definition is essentially in limiting or removable singularity terms, by considering up to sign f sup a sup g sup b sup with a and b such that the function has neither a zero nor a pole at P . This is achieved by taking a to be the multiplicity of g at P , and &minus b the multiplicity of f at P . The definition is then f , g sub P sub &minus 1 sup ab sup f sup a sup g sup b sup . See for example Jean Pierre Serre , Groupes alg briques et corps de classes , pp.44 46, for this as a special case of a theory on mapping algebraic curves into commutative groups. There is a generalisation of Serge Lang to abelian varieties Lang, Abelian Varieties .
