Social Networking and Psychology br As social networking has evolved with technology so has its implications with psychology . There have been many studies done to evaluate the impact of online social networks. One thing to be noted is honesty in the online domain. Dr. Curtis, a professor at the University of Maryland, noted that people with whom we are more familiar with, i.e. friends, family, etc., tend to be more honest with us through technologies, such as via text or instant message, or through website like Facebook than telling us in person. Facebook Depression Facebook Depression is described as when people get depressed, Facebook being the sources of the depression. Gwenn O Keefe, in response to The Associated Press, explains that Facebook is where all the teens are hanging out now. It s their corner store. O Keefe goes on to explain in the The Associated Press that status updates, photos of happy people, and the amount of Facebook friends are factors that could contribute to depression ref O Keefe, Gwenn. 1. Scarcity (social psychology)

Scarcity , in the area of social psychology , works much like scarcity in the area of economics . Simply put, humans place a higher value on an object that is scarce, and a lower value on those that are abundant. ref Mittone, Luigi. The Scarcity Bias. Applied Psychology An International Review , July 2009, Vol. 58 Issue 3, p453 468 ref The thought that we, as humans, want something we cannot have drives us to desire the object even more. This idea is deeply embedded in the intensely popular, Black Friday shopping Black Friday shopping extravaganza that U.S. consumers participate in every year on the day after Thanksgiving . More than getting a bargain on a hot gift idea, shoppers thrive on the competition itself, in obtaining the scarce product. ref Highhouse, Scott. Get em While They Last Effects of Scarcity Information in Job Advertisements. Journal of Applied Social Psychology , May 1998, Vol. 28 Issue 9, p779 795 ref Principles There are two social psychology principles that work with scarcity that increase its powerful force. One is social proof . This is a contributing factor to the effectiveness of scarcity, because if a product is sold out, or inventory is extremely low, humans interpret that to mean the product must be good since everyone else appears to be buying it. The second contributing principle to scarcity is brand commitment commitment and consistency . If someone has already committed themselves to something, then find out they cannot have it, it makes the person want the item more. Studies Numerous studies have been conducted on the topic of scarcity in social psychology. One of which sought to examine the effects of scarcity rhetoric in a job advertisement for restaurant server positions. Subjects were presented with two help wanted ads. One of which ... 1. Reproductive value (social psychology)

one source date April 2012 orphan date August 2009 Reproductive value RV is a term used in social psychology to describe the level of attractiveness of women . The reproduction value theory introduces a mechanism that men unintentionally use when searching for a partner. The level of the RV is decided by several things, including Genetic information, i.e. what is the quality of the genotype presented by the potential partner? This is without doubt the most important factor in this theory Social status , i.e. what is the salary or social stability of the potential partner? Numerous other things, i.e. what are the acquired results or achievements of the potential partner? It is clear now that the higher the RV gets, the more attractive a woman is. One might wonder if women have a similar mechanism when selecting a man. Though a lot of research is currently in progress on this subject, the term resource acquisition ability is known as the sexual opposite of the RV. 1. Reciprocity (international relations)

In international relations and treaty treaties , the principle of reciprocity states that favours, benefits, or penalties that are granted by one Sovereign state state to the citizen s or Juristic person legal entities of another, should be returned in kind. For example, reciprocity has been used in the reduction of tariff s, the grant of copyright s to foreign authors, the mutual recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments enforcement of judgments, and the relaxation of travel restrictions and passport visa requirements. The principle of reciprocity also governs agreements on extradition . Specific and diffuse reciprocity Several theorists have drawn a distinction between specific forms of reciprocity and diffuse reciprocity Keohane 1986 . Whilst specific reciprocity is exemplified by international trade negotiations, as suggested above, diffuse reciprocity points to a wider institutionalisation of Trust sociology trust . Through consistent cooperation in an international society , states are seen as building generally accepted standards of behaviour. These general standards exert their own Norm sociology normative pressure on state action, contributing to the development of long term obligations between Sovereign state states which stress cooperation. Thus in a system of diffuse reciprocity, states need not seek the immediate benefit guaranteed by specific reciprocity, but can act in the confidence that their cooperative actions will be repaid in the long run. 1. Reciprocity (Canadian politics)

Unreferenced date July 2009 Image Reciprocity pigs.jpg thumb 300px A 1911 political poster suggests the imbalance of benefits from reciprocity between the United States and Canada In nineteenth and early twentieth century politics of Canada Canadian politics , the term reciprocity was used to describe the concept of free trade with the United States of America . Reciprocity and free trade have been emotional issues in Canadian history, as they pitted two conflicting impulses, the desire for beneficial economic ties with the United States against the fear that closer economic ties would lead to American domination and annexation. 1880s to 1910s After Confederation, reciprocity was initially promoted as an alternative to Prime Minister John A. Macdonald s National Policy . Reciprocity meant that there would be no protective tariff s on all natural resources being imported and exported between Canada and the United States. This would allow prairie grain farmers access to the larger American market, and allow them to make more money on their exports.
