unreferenced date June 2007 A relay league is a chain of message forwarding stations in a system of optical telegraph s, Telegraphy Radiotelegraphy radio telegraph stations, or riding courier History courier s. An interesting description of these early 19th century methods and its evolution into the electrical telegraph networks of the mid to late 19th century is found in The Victorian Internet , a book by Tom Standage ISBN 0425171698. Radio relay leagues Amateur radio Radio amateur s have been early in arranging relay leagues, as is reflected in the name of the organization of American Radio Relay League ARRL , http www.arrl.org . Radio amateur message relay operations were originally conducted using Morse code in the first two decades of the 20th century using spark gap transmitter s. As vacuum tube s became affordable operations shifted to more efficient manual telegraphy transmitters, referred to as CW Continuous wave . Messages were relayed station to station typically covering four or more re transmission cycles to cover the continental United States , in an organized system of amateur radio networks. After World War II , voice and radioteletype implementations of the message relay system were employed. In contract bridge , relay is a term for a convention bridge conventional bid that usually has little or no descriptive meaning but asks partner to describe some feature of his hand. A relay is often the cheapest bid available but need not be. Stayman and Blackwood are common examples of relay bids. The rationale for introducing relay bids emerged from the idea that it is not always cost effective i.e. the best use of bidding space for both partners to describe their hands. Instead, only one partner can make the cheapest bids available relays while the other describes his hand. This is especially useful when the asker has a balanced or very strong hand. Relay bidding system s are for the most part based on relay bids in most sequences especially forcing ones , one partner just relays while the other describes his hand in a highly codified manner. While relay systems offer a higher level of exchanged information than natural systems, they also have the drawbacks that they are complicated to memorize and often exclude the players judgment, particular in regard to honor location, which can be crucial on occasion. There is often confusion between puppet bids and relays. A puppet bid requests partner to make the cheapest bid regardless of his hand. A relay bid requests partner to make a descriptive bid in response. The descriptive response can be natural as in Stayman or coded as in Blackwood . A marionette bid is similar to a puppet bid except that it allows responses other than the cheapest bid with certain uncommon hand types. Thus technically it s a relay but with the cheapest bid expected most of the time. See the Glossary of contract bridge terms for more definitions. For example, in an induction type relay, the operating time can be adjusted by adjusting the distance travelled by the disc whereas in a static relay it can be achieved by adjusting the value of the resistance in the R C time delay circuit. Image Imgageinverting 1.png thumb right Cross section of relay lens assembly System 1. Image Imageinverting 2.png thumb right Cross section of relay lens assembly System 2. Image Image erecting system.png thumb right Image erecting optical system for astronomical telescopes Erecting eyepiece . In optics, a relay lens is a lens or lens group that inverts an image and extends the optical tube. Relay lenses are found in endoscope s and periscope s for the purpose of extending the system, and before eyepiece s for the purpose of inverting an image. They may be made of one or more conventional lenses or achromatic doublet s, or a long cylindrical GRIN gradient index of refraction lens a GRIN lens . Relay lenses operate by producing intermediate planes of focus. For example, an objective lens such as an SLR lens produces an image plane where the image sensor would usually go. If you place a lens with focal length f a distance 2 f from that image plane and then put an image sensor 2 f beyond the lens, that lens will relay the first image to the second with 1 1 magnification see Lens optics Imaging properties Lens imaging properties . Ideally, this second image plane will be identical to the first, so you could put a sensor there and record exactly the same image. If a longer distance is needed, this can be repeated. In practice, the lens will be an achromatic doublet . Also, for endoscope applications, where small tube diameter is desirable, most of the tube is filled with glass, with thin air gaps to allow for powered surfaces because marginal ray angle is smaller at a given numerical aperture the higher the index of refraction , this allows the relay to have higher NA for a given diameter. These are known as Hopkins rod lenses . External links Lens erecting systems. http www.tpub.com content misc manuals 2 TM 9 258 TM 9 2580106.htm Image erecting systems http i916.photobucket.com ...
