Coord 41.117 73.235 display title Penfield Reef is a partially submerged reef that extends a mile into Long Island Sound from the coast of Fairfield, Connecticut . The reef is one of the most dangerous areas of Long Island Sound and continues to menace boaters despite the presence of the Penfield Reef Light house. The area was a peninsula a few centuries ago, gradually worn down to a series of islands and eventually to a sandbank shoal . Sand and stones collected from the reef for use as ballast on ships contributed to the rapid erosion. Cows once grazed on the peninsula, and two of the groups of rocks were later named Cows and Calves in recognition of the early history. Main Kiribati Carondelet Reef is a horseshoe shaped reef of the Phoenix Islands , also known as the Rawaki Islands, in the Republic of Kiribati . It is located 106 km southeast of Nikumaroro , at coord 05 34 S 173 51 W , and has a least depth of 1.8 meters. The lagoon is too shallow to be of much interest and the outer reef is a steep slope rather than a drop off, but it descends into very deep water. Healthy stony corals harbouring a myriad of reef creatures descend into the depths and many shoals of semi pelagic fish are seen in the clear visibility. On each reef the south walls are precipitous while their other boundaries are slopes, the walls are a result of prevailing currents and the direction of maximum sunlight encouraging coral growth.
