  1. Reflection nebula

File reflection.nebula.arp.750pix.jpg thumb 200px The Witch Head Nebula Witch Head reflection nebula IC2118 , about 900 light years from earth, is associated with the bright star Rigel in the constellation Orion. The nebula glows primarily by light reflected from Rigel, located just outside the top right corner of the image. Fine dust in the nebula reflects the light. The blue color is caused not only by Rigel s blue color but because the dust grains reflect blue light more efficiently than red. In Astronomy , reflection nebulae are interstellar cloud clouds of dust which reflect the light of a nearby star or stars. The energy from the nearby star, or stars, is insufficient to ionize the gas of the nebula to create an emission nebula , but is enough to give sufficient scattering to make the dust visible. Thus, the frequency spectrum shown by reflection nebulae is similar to that of the illuminating stars. Among the microscopic particles responsible for the scattering are carbon compounds ... waves polarized Kaler, 1997 . Edwin Hubble distinguished between the emission and reflection nebulae in 1922. 1. Signal reflection

Unreferenced date March 2007 Signal reflection occurs when a signal is transmitted along a transmission medium, such as a reflections on copper lines copper cable or an optical fiber . Some of the signal power may be reflected back to its origin rather than being carried all the way along the cable to the far end. This happens because imperfections in the cable cause Electrical impedance impedance mismatches and non linear changes in the cable characteristics. These abrupt changes in characteristics cause some of the transmitted signal to be reflected. In radio frequency RF practice, this is often measured in a dimensionless ratio known as voltage standing wave ratio VSWR with a VSWR bridge. The ratio of energy bounced back depends on the Impedance matching impedance mismatch . Mathematically, it is defined using the reflection coefficient . Because the principles are the same, this concept is perhaps easiest to understand when considering an optical fiber. Imperfections in the glass create mirrors that reflect the light back along the fiber. Impedance discontinuities cause attenuation , attenuation distortion , standing waves , ringing signal ringing and other effects because a portion of a transmitted signal will be reflected back to the transmitter transmitting device rather than continuing to the receiver radio receiver , much like an echo. This effect is compounded if multiple discontinuities cause additional portions of the remaining signal to be reflected back to the transmitter. This is a fundamental problem with the daisy chain electrical engineering daisy chain method of connecting electronic components. 1. Reflection theorem

Confusing article date February 2010 For reflection principles in set theory, see reflection principle . In algebraic number theory , a reflection theorem or Spiegelungssatz German language German for reflection theorem see Spiegel and Satz disambiguation Satz is one of a collection of theorems linking the sizes of different ideal class group s or ray class group s , or the sizes of different isotypic component s of a class group. The original example is due to Ernst Kummer Ernst Eduard Kummer , who showed that the class number of the cyclotomic field math mathbb Q left zeta p right math , with p a prime number, will be divisible by p if the class number of the maximal real subfield math mathbb Q left zeta p right math is. Another example is due to Scholz ref A. Scholz, Uber die Beziehung der Klassenzahlen quadratischer Korper zueinander, J. reine angew. Math. , 166 1932 , 201 203. ref . A simplified version of his theorem states that if 3 divides the class number of a real quadratic field math mathbb Q left sqrt d right math , then 3 also divides the class number of the imaginary quadratic field math mathbb Q left sqrt 3d right math . Both of the above results are generalized by Leopoldt s Spiegelungssatz , which relates the p rank s of different isotypic components of the class group of a number field K , considered as a Galois module module over the Galois group of a Galois extension K k . Extensions of his Spiegelungssatz were given by Oriat and Oriat Satge, where class groups were no longer associated with characters of the Galois group of K k , but rather by ideals in a group ring over the Galois group of K k . Leopoldt s Spiegelungssatz was generalized in a different direction by Kuroda, who extended it to a statement about ray class group s. This was further developed into the very general T S reflection theorem of Georges Gras ref Georges Gras, Class Field Theory ... also provided an Iwasawa theory Iwasawa theoretic reflection theorem. 1. Reflection attack

about the attack on authentication systems the denial of service attack Distributed Reflection Denial of Service A reflection attack is a method of attacking a challenge response authentication system that uses the same protocol in both directions. That is, the same challenge response protocol is used by each side to authenticate the other side. The essential idea of the attack is to trick the target into providing the answer to its own challenge. ref Computer Networks by Andrew S. Tanenbaum , 4th edition, ISBN 0 13 038488 7, pages 787 790. ref Attack The general attack outline is as follows The attacker initiates a connection to a target. The target attempts to authenticate the attacker by sending it a challenge. The attacker opens another connection to the target, and sends the target this challenge as its own. The target responds to the challenge. The attacker sends that response back to the target on the original connection. If the authentication protocol is not carefully designed, the target will accept that response as valid, thereby leaving the attacker with one fully authenticated channel connection the other one is simply abandoned . Solution Some of the most common solutions to this attack are described below The responder sends its identifier within the response so, if it receives a response that has its identifier in it, it can reject it. ref Ross J. 1. Deflection (physics)

Image Deflection.png right thumb 300px Deflection occurs when an object hits a plane surface In physics deflection is the event where an object collision collides and bounces against a plane surface. Magnetic deflection refers to Lorentz force s acting upon a charged particle moving in a magnetic field. An object s deflective efficiency can never equal or surpass 100 . For example, a mirror will never reflect exactly the same amount of light cast upon it. Also, a ball in free fall meaning no forces are acting on it other than gravity , upon hitting the ground, will never bounce back up to the spot where it first started to descend. This is due to the Laws of Thermodynamics , which state that, in every action, some energy being used in that action escapes into the environment. 1. Pulse (physics)

Context date April 2011 In physics , a pulse is a single disturbance that moves through a medium from one point to the next point. Pulse Reflection Consider a pulse moving through a medium perhaps through a rope or a slinky . When the pulse reaches the end of that medium, what happens to it depends on whether the medium is fixed in space or free to move at its end. For example, if the pulse is moving through a rope and the end of the rope is held firmly by a person, then it is said that the pulse is approaching a fixed end. On the other hand, if the end of the rope is fixed to a stick such that it is free to move up or down along the stick when the pulse reaches its end, then it is said that the pulse is approaching a free end. Free End File Pulse reflection free end 1.svg thumb Figure 1 A pulse reaching the end of the medium, the end point is free.
