The Institute on Religion in an Age of Science IRAS is a non denominational society that promotes and facilitates the ongoing dialectic betweenreligion and science. Both members of IRAS and non members congregate at the IRAS conference held annually at Star Island in New Hampshire . History IRAS evolved from the ideas of two pioneer groups. The first was a group of scientists from the Committee on Science and Values of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . The second group was an interfaith, religious coalition which hoped to revitalize religion for today s needs. Members of both groups saw the, at times, battlefield of conflicting ideologies of religion and science as a place of opportunity for a constructive relationship to emerge. In 1954 the scientists accepted an invitation to present their views to the religious group at a seven day conference on Religion in an Age of Science on Star Island. The October 1 issue of Science reported on the conference Ten scientists explained how they thought scientific and religious knowledge could be integrated... While there were a number of both scientists and clergy who held that religious truth was hardly susceptible of being approached by scientific beliefs, there was a strong recognition that today we can increase the scope and validity of our understanding of our destiny and our relationship to that in which we live and move and have our being, not only by reading ancient texts, but also by building up the science of theology in harmony with other science. On November 9, 1954, members of the two groups established the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science to work toward these goals. to all aspects of Christianity or were unconcerned about the relations betweenscience and religion ...Science and Religion in American Thought 1952 is a book by Edward A. In 1952, the first edition was simultaneously published by both Stanford University Press in Stanford, California and Oxford University Press in London, England. Key figures historically illustrated in the text are John William Draper , a late 19th century positivist Andrew Dickson White , the founding President of Cornell University John Fiske philosopher John Fiske , a late 19th century American philosopher William James David Starr Jordan , President and later Chancellor of Stanford University and John Dewey . Many first principles in quantum field theory are explained, or get further insight, in string theory Emission and absorption one of the most basic building blocks of quantum field theory, is the notion that particles such as electron s can emit and absorb other particles such as photon s . Thus, an electron may just split into an electron plus a photon , with a certain probability which is, roughly, the coupling constant . This is described in string theory as one string splitting into two. String theory Worldsheet This process is an integral part of the theory. The mode on the original string also splits between its two parts, resulting in two strings which possibly have different modes, representing two different particles. Coupling constant in quantum field theory this is, roughly, the probability for one particle to emit or absorb another particle, the latter typically being a gauge boson a particle carrying a fundamental interaction force . In string theory, the coupling constant is no longer a constant, but is rather determined by the abundance of strings in a particular mode, the dilaton . Strings in this mode couple to the worldsheet Curvature of Riemannian manifolds curvature of other strings, so their abundance through space time determines the measure by which an average string worldsheet will be curved. This determines its probability to split or connect to other strings the more a worldsheet is curved, it has a higher chance of splitting and reconnecting. Spin physics Spin each particle in quantum field theory has a particular spin s , which is an internal angular momentum . Classically, the particle rotates in a fixed frequency, but this cannot be understood if particles are point like. In string theory spin is understood by the rotation of the string For example, a photon with well defined spin spatial vector components i.e. in circular polarization looks like a tiny straight line revolving around its center.
