In physics , and in particular Theory of relativityrelativity , an event indicates a physical situation or occurrence, located at a specific point in spacetime space and time . For example, a glass breaking on the floor is an event it occurs at a unique place and a unique time, in a given frame of reference. ref A.P. French 1968 , Special Relativity, MIT Introductory Physics Series, CRC Press, ISBN 0748764224, p 86 ref Strictly speaking, the notion of an event is an idealization, in the sense that it specifies a definite time and place, whereas any actual event is bound to have a finite extent, both in time and in space. ref Leo Sartori 1996 , Understanding Relativity a simplified approach to Einstein s theories, University of California Press, ISBN 0520200292, p 9 ref One of the goals of relativity is to specify the possibility of one event influencing another. This is done by means of the metric tensor , which allows for determining the causal structure of spacetime. The difference or interval between two events can be classified into spacelike , lightlike and timelike separations. Only if two events are separated by a lightlike or timelike interval can one influence the other. Like most of the essays Asimov wrote for F&SF Magazine, each one in The Relativity of Wrong begins with an autobiographical anecdote which serves to set the mood. Several of the essays form a sequence explaining the discovery and uses of isotope s the introductory passages in these essays recount Asimov s not particularly pleasant personal relationship with Harold C. Urey , whom he met at Columbia University . Title essay In the title essay, Asimov argues that there exist degrees of wrongness, and being wrong in one way is not necessarily as bad as being wrong in another way. For example, if a child spells the word sugar as pqzzf , the child is clearly incorrect. Yet, Asimov says, a child who spells the word shuger or in some other phonetic way is less wrong than one who writes a random sequence of letters. Furthermore, a child who writes sucrose or C sub 12 sub H sub 22 sub O sub 11 sub completely disregards the correct spelling but shows a degree of knowledge about the real thing under study. orphan date August 2010 A Theory of Relativity ISBN 0 06 103199 2 is a 2001 novel written by United States American author Jacquelyn Mitchard . The book tells the story of a custody battle for a young girl following the sudden death of her parents. Plot summary When Ray and Georgia McKenna Nye are killed in a horrific car crash, leaving their daughter Keefer Kathryn an orphan , the couple s respective families both believe they are the right people to raise the girl, and consequently file for child custody custody . This book is essentially about the events surrounding the ensuing legal process which will decide Keefer s future. Keefer s maternal family are the McKennas, a Catholic family of Irish people Irish descent, and of modest means, living in rural Wisconsin . Prior to their deaths, Ray and Georgia had lived nearby and the family are fairly close. The paternal family, meanwhile, are the Nyes, born again Christians living in Florida who, though much more financially better off than the McKennas, do not appear to be as close. The McKennas are initially given guardianship of Keefer after managing to file their case first. However, Georgia s parents, Mark and Lorraine, realise that they may be too old to adopt the girl, so Georgia s brother, Gordon, is encouraged to seek custody of his niece . There are problems here, though, as Gordon is single, while he and Georgia were adopted, and adopted children do not have the same rights under Wisconsin law as blood relatives. As a result of these factors, Gordon s petition is eventually turned down by a Wisconsin judge and interim custody granted to the Nyes with a view to Keefer eventually being adopted by her father s relatives. Gordon is given permission to appeal the decision and quickly decides to do so. The driving force .... In general relativity , Birkhoff s theorem states that any spherically symmetric spacetime spherically symmetric solution of the vacuum field equations must be static spacetime static and asymptotically flat . This means that the exterior solution must be given by the Schwarzschild metric . The theorem was proven in 1923 by G. D. Birkhoff author of an even more famous Birkhoff theorem , the pointwise ergodic theorem which lies at the foundation of ergodic theory . However, Stanley Deser recently pointed out that it was published two years earlier by a little known Norwegian physicist, J rg Tofte Jebsen . Intuitive rationale The intuitive idea of Birkhoff s theorem is that a spherically symmetric gravitational field should be produced by some massive object at the origin if there were another concentration of mass energy somewhere else, this would disturb the spherical symmetry, so we can expect the solution to represent an isolated object. That is, the field should vanish at large distances, which is partly what we mean by saying the solution is asymptotically flat. Thus, this part of the theorem is just what we would expect from the fact that general relativity reduces to Newtonian mechanics Newtonian gravitation in the Newtonian limit . Implications The conclusion that the exterior ... have a spherically symmetric star of fixed mass which is experiencing spherical pulsations. Then Birkhoff ... is to change the location of the stellar surface . This means that a spherically pulsating star ... flat, so the exterior geometry of a spherically symmetric charged star must be given by the Reissner Nordstr m metric Reissner Nordstr m electrovacuum . merge to Theory of relativity date April 2012 Relativity The Special and General Theory is a short paper written by Albert Einstein with the aim of giving an exact insight into File The original 1920 English publication of the paper..jpg thumb The original 1920 English publication of the paper. the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics. It was first published in German in 1916 and later translated into English in 1920. It is divided into 3 parts, the first dealing with special relativity special relativity ,the second dealing with general relativity general relativity and the third dealing with considerations on the universe as a whole. There have been many versions published since the original in 1916, the latest in December, 2011. The work has been labelled unique in that it gives readers an insight into the thought processes of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.
