The active agent is usually a strong alkali , although some formulations are based on ammonium thioglycolate instead. The hair can be significantly weakened by the physical overlap of excessive applications or by a single excessive one, leading to brittleness, breakage, or even widespread alopecia . This hairstyle called for a man with Natural afro hair naturally kinky hair to have it chemically hair straightening straightened using a relaxer sometimes the pure corrosive chemical lye , so that the newly straightened hair could be styled in specific ways. Often, the relaxer was made at home, by mixing lye, eggs, and potatoes, the applier having to wear gloves and the receiver s head having to be rinsed thoroughly after application to avoid chemical burn s. Conks were often styled as large Pompadour hairstyle pompadour s although other men chose to simply slick their straightened hair back, allowing it to lie flat on their heads. Regardless of the styling, conks required a considerable amount of effort to maintain a man often had to wear a do rag of some sort at home, to prevent sweat or other agents from causing his hair to revert to its natural state prematurely. Also, the style required repeated application of relaxers as new hair grew in, it too had to be chemically straightened. Many of the popular musicians of the early to mid 20th century, including Chuck Berry , Louis Jordan , Little Richard , James Brown musician James Brown , and the members of The Temptations and The Miracles , were well known for sporting the conk hairstyle. The gatefold of the 1968 album Electric Mud shows blues legend Muddy Waters having his hair conked. The style fell out of popularity when the Black Power movement of the 1960s took hold, and the Afro became a popular symbol of African pride. Eyelash permanent wave , or more commonly called an eyelash perm , and may also refer to permanent relaxer that straightens the hair is a cosmetics procedure performed only by licensed Cosmetologists to flip up eyelashes using hair perming technology. Procedure Lashes are treated with a special solution, and then wrapped around a mini sponge or roller. The perming solution is applied to the upturned lash, and then it is left to set. The result may lasts for two to three months. The chemical reaction breaks and reform the bonds of the hair. This reaction, softening the lash s inner structure between the protein chains of the hair. The hair swells, stretches and softens, then is molded around the shape of the perm rod to from a curl. The procedure is performed in a salon or spa by a trained, licensed and certified individual. Every state requires individuals performing the procedure to have a valid Cosmetology license . History Historically, to achieve an upturned look, lash curlers and mascara were used. The first eyelash curler was invented by the Kurlash company. An early alternative method for curling hair that was suitable for use on people was invented in 1905 by German hairdresser Charles Nessler . Eyelash perming developed as a widely available solution sometime after 2000. Considerations Due to the chemicals involved, like any procedure, there is some risk. Side effects of the procedure have been known to include stinging around the eyes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration FDA , while approving of hair treatment, has not yet approved the procedure for use around the eyes. References cite web title Karl L. It was touted as a wash and wear style that was easier to care for than the other popular chemical treatment of the day, the relaxer. A Jheri curl was a two part application that consisted of a softener often called a rearranging cream to loosen the hair and a solution to set the curls. The rearranging cream used pungent chemicals, causing the naturally tight curls to loosen and hang. The loose hair was then set and a chemical solution was then added to the hair to permanently curl it. Perming the hair was time and labor intensive and expensive to maintain. The harsh mix of chemicals required for the process caused the wearer s natural hair to become extremely brittle and dry. To maintain the look of the Jheri curl, users were required to apply a curl activator spray and heavy moisturizers daily and to sleep with a plastic cap on their heads to keep the hairstyle from drying out. These products were relatively expensive a typical bottle of activator was small, retailed anywhere from 3 to 6, and was quickly depleted. The activator in particular had the undesirable side effect of being very greasy this would often stain clothing and anything that came into contact with it. Washing the hair cleansed it of the styling products but also exposed the damage done to the hair by the chemical process. Al ...   more details

  1. Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia , hot comb alopecia , or follicular degeneration syndrome is a type of alopecia first noticed in African Americans in the 1950s and reported by LoPresti et al. in 1968 as a result of application of petrolatum followed by a stove heated iron comb. The original theory was that the hot petrolatum would travel down to the hair root, burn the follicle, and after repetitive injury scarring would result. ref name skinaging Later CCCA was realized to affect men and women without a history significant for use of such styling techniques. Consequently, the terms follicular degeneration syndrome per Sperling and Sau in 1992 and then CCCA per Olsent et al. in 2003 were evolved. Plausible contributing factors may include other African American styling techniques such as relaxer s, tight braids, heavy extensions, certain oils, gels or pomades. Terminology The terminology of CCCA has been a source of regular confusion. Recent clarifications have been made, with the term central centrifugal cicatritial alopecia adopted as a diagnostic category by the North American Hair Research Society . 1. Waves (hairstyle)

unreferenced date March 2010 Short 360 Hair Waves often shortened to waves or 360 waves is a very common and sought after hairstyle for men. The hair is cropped short to the head in the styling of a Caesar cut. There are brushing techniques that will result in the resemblance of oceanic waves in the hair. Frequent and repeated brushing along with adequate moisturizing is the only way that this hairstyle is maintained although the amount of brushing may vary from person to person as the grade of hair changes. 360 Waves are the result of curls of hair that unfurl, allowing natural rows of roots to be exposed. As the hair lengthens in a process called wolfing, the waver can achieve deeper waves by allowing the hair to grow out. Through a popular process called wolfing refraining from getting a haircut for as long as possible while constantly brushing your hair in order to train it to stay down and wave the wave pattern in your hair will become more defined. When finally getting a haircut the waves may come out deeper depending on the time spent wolfing and the type of haircut you get. In the 1950s African American males would straighten their hair with a homemade lye relaxer or one from the barber shop and have a texturizing cream put in for a wave pattern. This was commonly worn by young men in Doo wop groups. Waves are maintained by daily brush ...   more details
