Notation InterchangeFileFormat NIFF is a music notation fileformat used primarily for transferring music notation between different scorewriter s. The NIFF project was started in February 1994 to create an open format that would allow exchange of music between various scanning Music OCR , editing and typesetting programs. The project was sponsored by several music notation software publishers. The NIFF format itself is based upon RIFF Fileformat RIFF ResourceInterchangeFileFormat , a file structure provided by Microsoft, in which data is divided into Lists, Chunks and Tags. Almost all data in a NIFF file are optional. The level of detail contained can range from just the pitch and timing akin to MIDI to a precise page layout, embedded graphics and embedded MIDI information. Though detailed and comprehensive, the standard never really caught on except for limited interchange between music OCR software and scorewriting software. Three of the music OCR programs in widespread use PhotoScore, SharpEye, and SmartScore export NIFF files. NIFF is now considered obsolete mainly due to the MusicXML format. As of February 2006 the NIFF project web site has been closed. The NIFF SDK is available at the http www.music notation.info en formats NIFF.html The NIFF SDK Archive for educational usage. About Requirements InterchangeFormat RIF ReqIF Rif Expand German date June 2011 Die Reue RIF ReqIF Requirements InterchangeFormat is an Extensible Markup Language XML fileformat that can be used to exchange requirements, along with its associated metadata, between software tools from different vendors. The requirements exchange format also defines a workflow for transmitting the status of requirements between partners. Although developed in the automotive industry, ReqIF is suitable for lossless exchange of requirements in any industry. History In 2004, HIS Herstellerinitiative Software a consortium of German automotive manufacturers, defined a generic requirements interchangeformat called RIF. The format was handed over in 2008 to ProSTEP iViP e.V. for further maintenance. A project group responsible for international standardization further developed the format and handed over a revised version to Object Management Group OMG as Request for Comment in 2010. As the acronym RIF had an ambiguous meaning within the OMG, the new name ReqIF was introduced to separate it from the W3C s Rule InterchangeFormat . SAIF Dataset SAIF has two major components that together define SAIFtalk. The first is the Class Syntax Notation CSN , a data definition language used to define a dataset s schema. The second is the Object Syntax Notation OSN , a data language used to represent the object data adhering to the schema. The CSN and OSN are contained in the same physical file, along with a directory at the beginning of the file. The use of ASCII text and a straightforward syntax for both CSN and OSN ensure that they can be parsed easily and understood directly by users and developers. A SAIF dataset, with a .saf or .zip extension, is compressed using the zip archive format. Data InterchangeFormat .dif is a text filefileformatformat used to import export single spreadsheet s between spreadsheet programs OpenOffice.org Calc , Microsoft Excel Excel , Gnumeric , StarCalc , Lotus 1 2 3 , FileMaker , dBase , Framework office suite Framework , Multiplan , etc. . It is also known as Navy DIF . One limitation is that DIF format cannot handle multiple spreadsheets in a single workbook. History DIF was developed by Software Arts, Inc. the developers of the VisiCalc program in the early 1980s. The specification was included in many copies of VisiCalc, and published in Byte Magazine . Bob Frankston developed the format, with input from others, including Mitch Kapor , who helped so that it could work with his VisiPlot program. Mitch later went on to found Lotus Software Lotus and make Lotus 1 2 3 happen. The specification was copyright 1981. DIF was a registered trademark of Software Arts Products Corp. a legal name for Software Arts at the time . Syntax DIF stores everything in an ASCII text file to mitigate many cross platform issues back in the days of its creation. However modern spreadsheet software, e.g. OpenOffice.org Calc and Gnumeric , offer more character encoding to export import. The file is divided into 2 sections header and data. PFIF was designed to enable information sharing among governments, relief organizations, and other survivor registries to help people find and contact their family and friends after a disaster. Overview PFIF is extended from XML . It consists of person records, which contain identifying information about a person, and note records, which contain comments and updates on the status and location of a person. Each note is attached to one person. PFIF defines the set of fields in these records and an XML based format to store or transfer them. PFIF XML records can be embedded in Atom standard Atom feeds or RSS feeds. PFIF allows different repositories of missing person data to exchange and aggregate their records. Every record has a unique identifier, which indicates the domain name of the original repository where the record was created. The unique record identifier is preserved as the record is copied from one repository to another. For example, any repository that receives a copy of a given person can publish a note attached to that person, and even as the note and person are copied to other repositories, they remain traceable to their respective original sources. History Within three days after the 2001 September 11 attacks , people were using over 25 different online forums and survivor registries to report and check on their family and friends. ref cite web url http webarchive.loc.gov lcwa0001 20010914220553 http safe.millennium.berkeley.edu ... the first specification for People Finder InterchangeFormat, ref cite web title A personal history ... Quetzal is a standardised fileformat for the saved state of Z machine games, invented by Martin Frost Programmer Martin Frost . Prior to the introduction of Quetzal, each Z machine interpreter saved games in its own format Quetzal enabled players to begin a game on one architecture for example, a pocket computer and end it on another. Use of the format is strongly recommended in Graham Nelson s Z machine standards document, but not obligatory. Most modern Z machines have the ability to save Quetzal files. The files are InterchangeFileFormat IFF files with a FORM of IFZS presumably standing for interactive fiction Z machine save , although the saved files are commonly given an extension of .sav less commonly sighted are quz and qtz . Despite the reference to the Z machine in the FORM code, the format has proved flexible enough to be adapted for at least one alternative architecture, Glulx .
