Five of these inlets are natural and have mobility characteristics. The sixth is an artificial inlet that was opened with the purpose of allowing easier access to the port of Faro, Portugal Faro . Presently the main inlet of the system is the Faro Olh o inlet, which was artificially opened. The process started in 1927 but only in 1952 were the engineering works completed and it assumed the present configuration. Within the Ria Formosa system, different and sometimes antagonistic uses may be found. Part of the system is a Natural Park but Ria Formosa also plays an important role in the region s economy. Beyond the tourist use the system also supports other economic activities like seafood farms including grooved carpet shell harvesting and the port of Faro. The Ria Formosa is also a designated Conservation areas of Portugal Natural Park of over 170 km and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods. It was one of the first 22 channels to commence broadcast on Astro in 1996. Programs on the network include Malay dramas, films and reality shows. In 2003, Astro Ria was the first Malaysian channel to have a talent show which is based on the Mexican television show La Academia , called Akademi Fantasia . The contest pits 12 singers in a bid to become the winner. The show is so popular in Malaysia and Brunei that a spin off version was made in Indonesia and Thailand. A second season was made, which enabled Brunei viewers to vote as well. In its third season, 14 contestants instead of the original 12 were competing for the competition and the winner, Mawi became an instant music celebrity. A fourth season commenced in May 2006. In May 2002, Astro Ria launched Bloomberg RIA News, which was essentially the Malay language version of Bloomberg L.P. Bloomberg News Malaysia. Ria Cortesio is a former American baseball umpire , working games at the Minor League Baseball Double A level. On March 29, 2007, she became the first woman since Pam Postema in 1989 to work a Major league exhibition game, serving alternately as the first and third base umpire in a spring training game between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks . The 2007 season was her ninth and final professional season and fifth at the Double A level. After being denied promotion for many years, she was released by the Minor League Baseball on October 30, 2007.
