The town of Burton, Georgia U.S. state Georgia now lies underwater, covered by Lake Burton Georgia Lake Burton . The town was located at the confluence of Dicks Creek Tallulah River Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River in Rabun County, Georgia and was established in the first half of the 19th century as a result of the Georgia Gold Rush . The first discovery of gold in Rabun County was just north of Burton, at the confluence of Moccasin Creek and the Tallulah River. The town was named after Jeremiah Burton , who owned the post office and general store there. Life He was educated in Sutton on Lound and at Magdalene College, Cambridge , ref Venn id BRTN647H name Burton, Hezekiah ref where he became a Fellow. He was an associate of a number of intellectual figures of the day, in particular Richard Cumberland philosopher Richard Cumberland whose De legibus naturae he edited and to which he contributed an Address to the Reader . He is mentioned in Pepys s Diary . He was chaplain to Sir Orlando Bridgeman, 1st Baronet, of Great Lever Orlando Bridgeman , and used the contact to support Cumberland. He was characterised as a Latitudinarian .
