  1. Ternary search

A ternary search algorithm is a technique in computer science for finding the maxima and minima minimum or maximum of a unimodal function function mathematics function that is either increasing function strictly increasing and then strictly decreasing or vice versa . A ternary search determines either that the minimum or maximum cannot be in the first third of the domain or that it cannot be in the last third of the domain, then repeats on the remaining two thirds. A ternary search is an example of a divide and conquer algorithm see search algorithm . The function Assume we are looking for a maximum of f x and that we know the maximum lies somewhere between A and B . For the algorithm to be applicable, there must be some value x such that for all a , b with A a < b x , we have f a < f b , and for all a , b with x a < b B, we have f a > f b . 1. Search tree

Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 In computer science , a search tree is a binary tree data structure in whose nodes data values are stored from some ordered set , in such a way that in order traversal of the tree visits the nodes in ascending order of the stored values. This means that for any internal node containing a value mvar v , the values mvar x stored in its left subtree satisfy math x v , and the values mvar y stored in its right subtree satisfy math v y . Each subtree of a search tree is by itself again a search tree. Search trees can implement the data type of finite multiset s. The advantage of using search trees is that the test for membership can be performed efficiently provided that the tree is reasonably balanced, that is, the leaves of the tree are at comparable depths. Various search tree data structures exist, several of which also allow efficient insertion and deletion of elements, which operations then have to maintain tree balance. If the multiset being represented is immutable, this is not an issue. Search trees can also implement associative array s by storing key value pairs, where the ordering is based on the key part of these pairs. In some kinds of search trees the data values are all stored in the leaves of the tree. In that case some additional information needs to be stored in the internal tree nodes to make efficient operations possible. Examples Some examples of search tree data structures are AVL tree s, Red black tree s, splay tree s and Tango Trees which are instances of self balancing binary search tree s Ternary search tree s, in which each internal node has exactly three children B tree s, commonly used in databases B tree s, like B trees but with all data values stored in the leaves van Emde Boas tree s, very efficient if the data values are fixed size integer s. 1. Search coil

Unreferenced date December 2009 A search coil is a device for measuring Eye movement sensory eye movement using coil s that are embedded into a tightly fitting contact lens or a rubber ring that adheres to the human eye eye . In animal studies, the search coil may be surgically implanted into the sclera of the eye. Alternating magnetic field s are generated by magnets positioned around the eye. Through electromagnetic induction , Current electricity electric currents are generated in the search coils. The polarity and amplitude of the current generated varies with the direction and angular displacement of the eye. By measuring these values, the position of the eye can be determined. Search coils can be applied to one or both eyes. In order to detect eye orientation in more than one dimension e.g. up down vs. left right , multiple magnets oriented orthogonal ly to each other may be used. Each magnet generates a field using a different frequency, allowing the readings from the search coil to be analyzed by computer to determine displacement in multiple dimensions. Additionally, a second search coil can be added to measure Torsion tensor torsional rotation. A more crude search coil also called exploring coil is also used in laboratory experiments in schools to measure the magnetic field in a certain region of space. In this case the search coil consists of a simple wire coil or solenoid connected to a sensitive ammeter or galvanometer . The coil is placed in the magnetic field to be measured and quickly withdrawn to a region of space with a negligible magnetic field. As the search coil moves the magnetic flux linked with the coil changes. This induces a current in the coil which can be registered on the galvanometer . 1. Dichotomic search

In computer science , a dichotomic search is a search algorithm that operates by selecting between two distinct alternatives dichotomies at each step. It is a specific type of divide and conquer algorithm . A well known example is binary search . Abstractly, a dichotomic search can be viewed as following edges of an implicit binary tree structure until it reaches a leaf a goal or final state . This creates a theoretical tradeoff between the number of possible states and the running time given k comparisons, the algorithm can only reach O 2 sup k sup possible states and or possible goals. Some dichotomic searches only have results at the leaves of the tree, such as the Huffman tree used in Huffman compression, or the implicit classification tree used in Twenty Questions . Other dichotomic searches also have results in at least some internal nodes of the tree, such as a dichotomic search table for Morse code . There is thus some looseness in the definition. Though there may indeed be only two paths from any node, there are thus three possibilities at each step choose one onwards path or the other, or stop at this node. Image Morse code tree3.png thumb 650px center A graphical representation of the dichotomic search table for Morse code . Shifting to the left represents a Dit . , and a shift to the right represents a Dah . Where one lands indicates the letter for the code. Dichotomic searches are often used in repair manuals, sometimes graphically illustrated with a flowchart similar to a fault tree .
