While vacationing in St. Louis in 1928, Elson was touring KSLG AM KWK when a receptionist saw him among 40 men in line for an audition and thought he was going for one as well. He became a finalist, and was hired after a vote by listeners. A few days later, officials at Chicago s WGN AM WGN heard about Elson s victory and wondered what a Chicago native was doing broadcasting for a St. Louis station. They quickly hired him. Starting in 1929, he began calling games for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox . Such double duty would be impossible today. However, in those days, the Cubs and White Sox almost never played at home on the same day, and most teams recreated road games via telegraph information. In 1930, he called his first 1930 World Series World Series for the Mutual Broadcasting System the first of 12 in a row. Elson also called Chicago Bears football in the 1930s and early 40s. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years in World War II a stint which earned him the nickname The Ol Commander. However, at the request of Franklin D. File RebeccaElson1987.jpg right thumb 200px Rebecca Elson 1987 Born in Montreal , Quebec , as a teenager Elson often travelled Canada with her geologist father as he performed field research. She earned a bachelor s degree from Smith College , a master s degree from the University of British Columbia , and attended University of Cambridge Cambridge University where she received a Ph.D. in astronomy. Elson did her postdoctoral work at the Institute for Advanced Study under the supervision of John N. Bahcall , after which she took up a Bunting Fellowship at Radcliffe College , where she taught creative writing. In the early 1990s she returned to Cambridge to accept the research position she would hold for the remainder of her life. Her work centered on globular clusters , chemical evolution and galaxy formation. Elson was diagnosed with non Hodgkins lymphoma at the age of 29. With treatment, it went into remission, and in 1996 she married the Italy Italian artist Angelo di Cintio. However, the cancer returned soon afterwards. Elson died of the disease in Cambridge in May 1999, at the age of 39. A volume of wide ranging poetry and essays she wrote from her teens until shortly before her death was published posthumously as A Responsibility to Awe in 2001 in the United Kingdom , and in 2002 in the United States .     Roy L. Elson 1930 2010 was an United States American politician from Arizona , and a onetime aide and protege of longtime U.S. Senator Carl Hayden D AZ . He was perhaps best known as the US Democratic Party Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate from Arizona in 1964 and 1968. After graduating from the University of Arizona he joined the staff of Senator Hayden in 1952, but was soon called into active duty in the air force during the Korean War. Returning to the Senate in 1955, he remained on the staff until Hayden retired. During his first bid he ran for the seat held by Republican Party United States Republican Barry Goldwater , who declined to seek a third term in order to seek the Republican Party United States Republican POTUS Presidential United States presidential election, 1964 nomination in 1964 . Goldwater lost to incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson .
