He represented Lambton East in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1908 to 1914 as a Liberal Party of Ontario Liberal member. He was born in County Armagh , Ireland , the son of Joseph McCormick who was of Scotland Scottish descent, and came to Warwick, Ontario Warwick Township , Canada East in 1862. He became a brick maker and bought a brickyard there in 1877. In 1876, he married Elizabeth Smith. McCormick served on the council for Warwick, was reeve from 1891 to 1894 and warden for Lambton County, Ontario Lambton County in 1892. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1894. He was defeated by John Burton Martyn in 1914. Adams, a scion of the famous Adams family that produced two American Presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams , was born in Greenville, South Carolina , the son of a Rev. Joseph Quincy Adams, a Baptist clergyman, and Mamie Fouch e Adams n e Davis . He received his B.A. degree from Wake Forest College in 1900, and earned an M.A. degree from the same institution in 1901. He continued his education at the University of Chicago 1902&ndash 3 , and at the University of Berlin 1907 . He pursued a teaching career at several institutions, notably at Cornell University , where he also edited the journal Cornell Studies in English 1910&ndash 31 . Adams married Helen Banks on January 29, 1931, though she died a short four years later, on September 14, 1935.
