He was the son of John M. James and Mary G. Poor James. His ancestor John James came to America from Pembrokeshire , Wales in the mid 17th century. He married Zeralda James Zeralda Cole on 28 December 1841. His children were Frank James Alexander Franklin , Robert, Jesse Woodson James Jesse and Susan Lavenia. James was a noted Revivalism revivalist . Probate records show that at his death he owned six slaves and was a commercial hemp farmer. He was among the founders of William Jewell College in 1849. In April 1850, James left his family for California to prospect for gold and preach to the crowds of goldminers during the California gold rush . Shortly after arriving in California in August 1850, he contracted cholera and died on August 18, 1850, in the Hangtown Gold Camp, later known as Placerville . He was buried there in an unmarked grave. James s death left his family saddled with debts and many of his possessions, including one of the slaves, were auctioned off to pay them. His widow Zerelda married Benjamin Simms , a wealthy farmer, on September 30, 1852. This however did not last, they soon separated. JamesRobert Rhind , architect, was born in Inverness , Scotland in 1854 and trained as an architect in his father s local practice. He was successful in the architectural competition for new libraries to be constructed in Glasgow following Andrew Carnegie s gift of 100,000 to the city in 1901. His designs were selected for 7 libraries, allowing him to demonstrate his individual interpretation of Edwardian Baroque architecture . Rhind s libraries were all built with locally quarried sandstone, which blended in with the existing tenement neighbourhoods. His landmark buildings were greatly enhanced by his liberal use of columns, domes and sculpted features. Many of the fa ades were decorated with stone and bronze statues by the noted Glasgow sculptor, William Kellock Brown . Rhind retained his base in Inverness while he temporarily occupied offices in Glasgow city centre during the construction of the new Carnegie libraries .
