When his father was named List of colonial governors of New Jersey Governor of New Jersey in 1738, his son s name appeared on his list of councilors. Less than a year later, Governor Morris named Robert the Chief Justice of the provincial Supreme Court. His commission was set to run during good behavior of same , which differed from that of his predecessor, Robert L. Hooper , whose terms was determined to run through the royal pleasure . His term was marked by increased punctuality and efficiency. He served as deputy governor of Pennsylvania from 1754 to 1756, during the French and Indian War , when he often clashed with the Assembly over proposals to emit paper money to fund the war. RobertMorris 1745 June 2, 1815 was a New Jersey attorney and judge, serving in both state and federal courts. Morris was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey and read law to enter the Bar in 1770. He engaged in private practice in New Brunswick through 1776. In 1777, he was named Chief justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey , until 1779. He thereafter returned to private practice until 1790. Morris received a recess appointment from President George Washington on August 28, 1790 to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey vacated by the death of David Brearley . Morris was formally nominated to the seat on December 17, 1790, and three days later he was confirmed by the United States Senate and received his commission. When the District of New Jersey was divided into the Eastern District of New Jersey and the Western District of New Jersey on February 13, 1801, Morris was reassigned by operation of law to both of the newly created districts. The two districts were re consolidated into a single court on July 1, 1802, and Morris was again reassigned by operation of law to his original appointment. He served until his death, in New Brunswick. RobertMorris Montgomery May 12, 1849 June 27, 1920 was a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court , and a judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals . Montgomery was in the United States Army , Seventh Michigan Cavalry , during the American Civil War , in 1864. He read law to be admitted to the bar in 1870, entering private practice in Pentwater, Michigan , in 1871. He was an assistant assessor of internal revenue for the state of Michigan prior to 1873, and prosecuting attorney for Oceana County from 1873 1879, also maintaining a private practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1873 to 1877, and serving as an assistant U.S. Attorney , for the Western District of Michigan for 1877 to 1881. His judicial career began with service as a judge of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit of Michigan , from 1881 to 1888. After a brief return to private practice, Montgomery became an Associate Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court in 1892. He served on that court until 1910, including stints as Chief Justice from 1900 to 1901, and in 1910. Nominated to the U.S. Court of Customs Appeals by President William Howard Taft , Montgomery was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 30, 1910. He served as presiding judge from 1910 until his death, in 1920. He served as an assistant to United States Attorney U.S. Attorney James A. Hamilton and as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1833 and 1834. In 1838, New York Governor William L. Marcy appointed Morris to the position of Recorder of deeds recorder of New York. He served in that capacity until 1841, when Governor William H. Seward removed him from the office in connection with the Glentworth scandal . Glentworth incident The Glentworth conspiracy involved a plot by tobacco inspector James B. Glentworth to send workers from Pennsylvania to New York under the guise of laying pipes for the city, but in reality to cast votes for Whig Party United States Whig Presidential candidate William Henry Harrison .
