for the Tangerine Dream album Rockoon album Image Deacon Rockoon.jpg thumb A Deacon rockoon just after shipboard launch. A rockoon from rocket and balloon is a solid fuel rocket solid fuel sounding rocket that, rather than being immediately lit while on the ground, is first carried into the upper atmosphere by a gas filled balloon, then separated from the balloon and automatically ignited. This allows the rocket to achieve a higher altitude, as the rocket does not have to move under power through the lower and thicker layers of the atmosphere. The original concept was developed by Cmdr. Lee Lewis, Cmdr. G. Halvorson, S. F. Singer, and James A. Van Allen during the Aerobee rocket firing cruise of the USS Norton Sound AVM 1 U.S.S. Norton Sound on March 1, 1949. A serious disadvantage is that balloons cannot be steered and consequently neither the direction the launched rocket moves in nor the region where it will fall is easily adjustable. Therefore, a large area for the fall of the rocket is required for safety reasons. Early atmospheric research TIME magazine reported in 1959 Van Allen ... ft., but the rocket hanging under it did not fire. The second Rockoon behaved in the same maddening ... to ignite the rockets, Van Allen heated cans of orange juice, snuggled them into the third Rockoon ... The music is written as a sound accompaniment for the different scenic video scenes about the Grand Canyon in the film Canyon Dreams by Jan Nickman released by Miramar . The tracks are divided into various episodes and related to the titles of the cuts. The distinctive quality of this disc is the Indigenous peoples of the Americas Native American influence. The unique style of Edgar Froese , Christopher Franke , and Paul Haslinger make them experts in creating sequenced atmospheric soundscapes, and this is exactly what they do here. They use a Native American pace and add native flutes to give the disc a feel of the American Southwest . The execution is however, unmistakably recognizable as the Berlin School of electronic music . This makes the album unique and the reason that Tangerine Dream received its first Grammy nomination with this album. The album is the start of a new direction using a combination of the group s progressive style and its current commercial leanings. The music ambience relates to contemporary musicians such as Soulfood , Steve Roach musician Steve Roach , Matthias Gohl , and Michael Stearns . Album History In 1991 the soundtrack of the video release Canyon Dreams was released officially as the first TD album by the Seattle based Miramar company, beginning the band s Seattle Years . Orphan date November 2006 Image uofthag.jpg thumb right The University of Toronto s High Altitude Group was founded in early 2005 by UTIAS Masters students Tarun S. Tuli and Karan Sarda . The purpose of the group is to involve students in a project to challenge current mid powered model rocket altitude records. To achieve this goal, a method known as a Rockoon is being used in which a launch platform with the rocket attached is lofted by a weather balloon to an altitude of 50,000 80,000 feet. Once there, the balloon is released and the rocket is launched under its own power through the use of commercially available solid rocket motors. The group will undertake the design and construction of all major components for the rockets themselves including the needed payloads and wireless communications systems . At present, several launches are planned in 2006 in order to test the various payload components that are necessary for high altitude flights. Simultaneously, development of the high altitude launch platforms is being performed by the group. The high altitude balloon assisted attempts are expected to occur at the earliest in Q2 2008. It was formed in 1996 specifically to be a contender for the Ansari X PRIZE for the first non governmental reusable manned spacecraft. The project was based in Toronto , Ontario , Canada and led by Brian Feeney. The original da Vinci Project is no longer operating. A documentary was filmed throughout much of the project s life from 2000 through post XPRIZE roundup footage in 2008. The documentary accumulated some 1000 hours or so of footage. It was a private undertaking by Michel Jones of Riverstone Productions, Toronto, and as of early 2009 was still in a preliminary stage of editing and completion. Spacecraft design The project s design was a rocket powered spacecraft to be air launch air launched from a helium balloon at an altitude of about 21  km 65,000  ft . The project scope included design and construction of both the spacecraft and the launching balloon. The chosen design can be described as a manned rockoon . Citation needed date October 2010 History and status The project was established in 1996. It is named after Leonardo da Vinci , who, among innumerable other inventions, was the first recorded person to design an aircraft. The project was staffed entirely by volunteers. The project unveiled a mockup of their spacecraft, Wild Fire , on August 5, 2004 at a hangar at Toronto Downsview Airport Downsview Airport in Toronto . At this point, it was considered a contender for the Ansari X PRIZE , and Tier One had just given notice of their planned competitive flights. It consists of Haas balloon launched orbital rocket, Haas 2 airplane launched orbital rocket, Haas 2b ground launched suborbital rocket and Super Haas ground launched orbital rocket. It was named after Conrad Haas , a medieval austro romanian rocket pioneer, that first proposed the ideea of a multi stage rocket. Haas Haas was a Romania n carrier rocket , which was developed by ARCASPACE ARCA as part of the European Lunar Explorer ELE programme. It was designed to be air launched from a high altitude balloon , similar to the United States American Rockoon experiments of the 1950s. Prior to the development of Haas, ARCA had already launched two Stabilo Rocket Stabilo rockets from balloons. It is fueled by hydrogen peroxide and bitumen . The Haas rocket is a three stage rocket capable of placing 400 kilograms of payload into low Earth orbit . Its maiden flight will carry the European Lunar Explorer spacecraft, ARCA s entry into the Google Lunar X Prize , following a series of engine tests which began in 2009. It was abandoned when ARCA decided to stop using solar and helium balloons for their space program.
