It is located in the north eastern part of the province, 90 km north west from Fort Nelson, British Columbia Fort Nelson and it is bordered to the north by the Alaska Highway . Access is mostly done by boat, on horseback or by hiking. At 6,657.1 km , it is the largest protected area in the Muskwa Kechika Management Area ref http www.muskwa kechika.com management area protected.asp Muskwa Kechika Protected Areas , Muskwa Kechika Management Area ref and the third largest provincial park in British Columbia. The park borders Stone Mountain Provincial Park to the north west and Kwadacha Wilderness Provincial Park to the south west, creating a large contiguous protected area in the Muskwa Ranges of the Canadian Rockies . The V rendrye Brothers Journey to the RockyMountains . The V rendrye Brothers were the first Europeans to cross the northern Great Plains and see the RockyMountains 1742 43 . We know very little about their journey. All we know comes from a journal found in the French archives in 1851, another document in the French archives and a lead plate found buried near Pierre, South Dakota . The journal is difficult to interpret. The mountains they saw were probably the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, but they could have been the Black Hills or the Laramie Mountains . The journal states the trip may made by the Chevalier Verendrye and one of his brothers who are otherwise unidentified. Most likely the Chevalier was Louis Joseph Gaultier de La V rendrye and the brother was Fran ois de La V rendrye but we cannot be sure.
