Pill prizes are the idea put forth by Joseph E. Stiglitz when he wrote Prizes, not patents , in order to address shortfalls of using patent s from a pharmaceutical drug perspective. Patents are awarded to inventor s and firms in order to promote innovation by providing incentive s beyond traditional market incentives. Stiglitz is critical of patents and how they fail provide similar incentives to innovations which are not marketable to the normal consumer society while simply restricting information which is inefficient. Stiglitz provides the idea of prize s instead of patents to be awarded in order to further advance pharmaceutical solutions to global problems such as AIDS . Patents essentially provide a temporary monopoly on a product to the first inventor or firm which comes up with the product. Patents vary in length but are designed to last long enough for the innovator to make a return on investment . The nature of patents makes them an incentive so long as the product being invented is distributed to consumers through markets. While patented products are in the market, the producer can place any price on the product, regardless of the price of production which typically dictates prices in markets. If a product is not being distributed through markets then a patent cannot provide proper incentive for innovation. Patents do however provide gain through the restriction of information to others. Stiglitz identifies this as a problem of patents for the innovation of drug s and other products being distributed not with the purpose of making a Profit economics profit , but to solve ... immediately affordable instead of pending on a patent expiration. Awarding prizes offers a fixed ... by offering prizes instead of patents. Stiglitz discusses the idea of using foreign aid assistance funds to finance prizes as it would provide greater foreign aid than what funds are being used for currently. ref cite journal url http www.paecon.net PAEReview issue42 Stiglitz42.pdf title Prizes ... more details

The Bergen Prizes were three British Empire British cargo ship merchantmen Betsy, Union, and Charming Polly that were captured by Captain Pierre Landais of the USS Alliance 1778 USS Alliance and John Paul Jones of the USS Bonhomme Richard 1765 USS Bonhomme Richard in 1779. Landais, who had had numerous disagreements with Jones over the command of the squadron in European waters, sent the vessels to Bergen, Norway . Once there, they were repaired and handed back to the British consul, depriving their captors of the satisfaction of having hurt the enemy and of any hope of being rewarded for their efforts.. However, the subject of indemnity was broached by Jones, who turned up in person at Copenhagen . Ultimately, no payment was made by the Danish government due to the existence of a treaty signed between the English and Danish governments in 1660 that obligated Denmark to England. As a result, no reward was given to the captains or crew of the United States vessels responsible for the capture of the merchantmen until the United States Congress ratified reimbursement to Landais in 1806 and the heirs of Jones in 1848. It tells stories of three principal characters Adam Coopersmith a genius immunologist , Isabel Da Costa a child prodigy who goes to win the Nobel prize in physics and Sandy Raven a cell biologist who is very bitter after he is betrayed . The novel deals with the relationships of all the three characters, and how life brings them together. Adam Coopersmith, an Obstetrician and Immunologist, helps in saving the life of Thomas Hartnell, known as the Boss in Washington, who is one of the advisors to the President of the United States, and arguably, a man holding more personal power than the President himself. Adam s mentor, Dr.Max Rudolph, takes a slight detour from his ethical conduct and gives an FDA unapproved life saving cancer treatment whose efficacy is proved in his laboratory, to Hartnell. Adam serves as the attending doctor and ends up falling in love with Hartnell s daughter Antonia, who is the Assistant Attorney General in Washington. After the demise of Max Rudolph, who is more of a father figure to Adam than a professional colleague, Adam is broken and finds solace in Antonia s arms. They get married and have a daughter, Heather. However things soon start changing as Adam and his daughter slowly start realising that Antonia is married to her career, and in her list of priorities family figures quite below her work and her father. This slowly leads to a rift between Adam and Antonia, and he is drawn to Anya Avilov, the childless and abandoned wife of a Russian migr Dr.Dmitri Avilov. Dmitri abandons Anya when he realises she is incapable of conceiving, and Adam, the attending obstetrician, rushes to fill in the gap in both his and her life. Eventually, Adam divorces Antonia and marries Anya. Antonia wins custody of Heather, but Heather always remains more attached ... to a commitment.
