  1. Rood of Grace

The Rood of Grace was a crucifix kept at Boxley Abbey in Kent in southeast England . It was claimed to be miraculous for the wooden likeness of Jesus was said to move or come to life. The Rood s renown was such that Boxley became a pilgrimage site. At Henry VIII s dissolution of the monasteries , it was discovered that the statue contained wires and other contrivances to create the so called miracle. After this discovery, the Rood was shown off by the newly Protestant government to denouncement the Roman Catholic s, and was eventually burned at London . According to tradition, the Rood was brought to Boxley Abbey on a stray horse. Considering that a miracle, the monks of the abbey took the crucifix. William Lambarde , in his 1570 book, Perambulation of Kent , describes how the Rood was created by an English carpenter taken prisoner by the French in order to ransom himself. The Rood was able to take various facial expressions, which differed based on the amount of the offerings. After the exposure of the fraud at the dissolution of the monasteries, the Rood was paraded around various market towns, including Maidstone, Kent . On 12 February 1538 John Hilsey , Bishop of Rochester, denounced the Rood of Grace as a fraud, exhibited its machinery and broke it to pieces. ref Robert Hutchinson, Thomas Cromwell 2007 , pp. 162 163. ref The Rood was eventually burned in London along with numerous other statues of Roman Catholic saints. 1. Legend of the Rood

The Legend of the Rood Latin lang la De ligno sancte crucis is a complex of medieval tales loosely derived from the Old Testament . In its fullest form, the narrative tells how the dying Adam sends his son Seth back to Paradise to seek an elixir which will render him immortal. This part of the tale is sometimes referred to as the Quest of Seth for the Oil of Life . The angel guarding the gates of Paradise refuses Seth access, but does give him a seed from the tree from which Adam and Eve had stolen the apple. On his return, finding his father dead, Seth places this seed under his tongue, and then buries him at Golgotha . A tree grows from the seed, which is cut down. The wood experiences many adventures, reappearing as a leitmotif in popular renderings of many Old Testament stories. At one point it is a bridge over which the Queen of Sheba passes. Ultimately it is made into the cross Middle English rood on which Jesus is crucified. The Legend of the Rood is a key component in the complex of motifs known as the Medieval popular Bible . It is found in many medieval Adam Books, and provides the central framework of works such as the Welsh Ystorya Adaf . These narratives have been extensively studied by Beryl Smalley , Brian O Murdoch , Robert Miller and others. Medieval scholars tend to use the word legend solely as a translation of Latin lang la legenda , meaning the biography of saints as a literary form, and hence are often reluctant to use the word too liberally in other contexts. However, as a set phrase, Legend of the Rood has become familiar enough to be uncontroversial. 1. Theoderic Rood

Theoderic Theodoric or Theodericus Rood was a printer of incunabula at Oxford , England . His activities in the city can be dated with any certainty only to the years 1481 and 1482, but probably extend between around 1481 and 1484. Several earlier printed books, dating from 1478 and 1479, and an edition of John Mirk s Liber festivalis of 1486 or 1487, which were once attributed to Rood s press are now thought to be the work of other, as yet unidentified, printers. Life and work Rood came to Oxford from Cologne , bringing types and possibly a press with him. 1. Markland (Scots)

A markland or merkland lang gd Marg fhearainn is an old Scotland Scottish unit of land measurement. There was some local variation in the equivalences, for example, in some places eight ounceland s were equal to one markland, but in others, such as Islay , a markland was twelve ouncelands. The markland derived its name from the old coin the Merk Scots cognate with German mark and various other European coinages, see Mark money , which was the annual rent paid on it, and so it was calculated by this, rather than its actual area. Originally a Scots mark or merk was 13s 4d 160 pence , but the Scottish coinage depreciated against the England English , and by the 18th century a Scots merk was worth only 13 sup 1 sup sub 3 sub d sterling one twelfth of its original value. Although such coins were abolished by the Acts of Union 1707 , some stayed in circulation for decades, and the names themselves remained in common use for centuries.
