The Rood of Grace was a crucifix kept at Boxley Abbey in Kent in southeast England . It was claimed to be miraculous for the wooden likeness of Jesus was said to move or come to life. The Rood s renown was such that Boxley became a pilgrimage site. At Henry VIII s dissolution of the monasteries , it was discovered that the statue contained wires and other contrivances to create the so called miracle. After this discovery, the Rood was shown off by the newly Protestant government to denouncement the Roman Catholic s, and was eventually burned at London . According to tradition, the Rood was brought to Boxley Abbey on a stray horse. Considering that a miracle, the monks of the abbey took the crucifix. William Lambarde , in his 1570 book, Perambulation of Kent , describes how the Rood was created by an English carpenter taken prisoner by the French in order to ransom himself. The Rood was able to take various facial expressions, which differed based on the amount of the offerings. After the exposure of the fraud at the dissolution of the monasteries, the Rood was paraded around various market towns, including Maidstone, Kent . In its fullest form, the narrative tells how the dying Adam sends his son Seth back to Paradise to seek an elixir which will render him immortal. This part of the tale is sometimes referred to as the Quest of Seth for the Oil of Life . The angel guarding the gates of Paradise refuses Seth access, but does give him a seed from the tree from which Adam and Eve had stolen the apple. On his return, finding his father dead, Seth places this seed under his tongue, and then buries him at Golgotha . A tree grows from the seed, which is cut down. The wood experiences many adventures, reappearing as a leitmotif in popular renderings of many Old Testament stories. At one point it is a bridge over which the Queen of Sheba passes. Ultimately it is made into the cross Middle English rood on which Jesus is crucified. The Legend of the Rood is a key component in the complex of motifs known as the Medieval popular Bible . It is found in many medieval Adam Books, and provides the central framework of works such as the Welsh Ystorya Adaf . Holy Rood Cemetery is located at 2126 Wisconsin Avenue Washington, D.C. Wisconsin Avenue NW at the southern end of the Glover Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It stands at one of the highest elevations in Washington, D.C. and has memorable views. Holy Rood Cemetery contains approximately 7,000 graves, including as many as 1,000 free and enslaved African Americans , and may be the best documented slave burial ground in the District of Columbia. Richard Rood born 1955 is an American violin ist, and is currently a leading member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra a well as a 1st violinist of the New York City Opera and the Associate Concertmaster of the Santa Fe Opera during the summer season. Rood, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio, was appointed membership with Orpheus after a history of regularly performing, touring, and recording with the group for 15 years. Currently he continues to hold important positions as a principal player with Lincoln Center s Mostly Mozart Festival and American Symphony. He is a member of the New York City Opera and American Ballet Theater orchestras, as well as the American Symphony Orchestra . He has performed in over 20 countries, appeared on over 75 recordings, and as a member of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Orpheus , he has been awarded three Grammy Awards. The New York Times praised him as an especially fine young violinist , and the Newark Star Ledger similarly raved that he is worth his weight in gold .
