It was altered and extended in 1836 by Thomas Hopper architect Thomas Hopper , who incorporated some panelling and other material brought from another Long family property, Whaddon House, which had been rescued from the fire there the previous year. The estate was originally purchased by Edward Long of Monkton House Monkton in 1597. In the 19th century a considerable amount of money was spent on improving its agriculture, but the Long family saw little return for their expenditure, and the changes in taxation on agricultural land brought about by the David Lloyd George Lloyd George government, made it financially unviable. Wikify date January 2011 Orphan date September 2010 To the Rose upon the Rood of Time is poem by W. B. Yeats that was published in The Rose in 1893. The poem is one of many early Yeatsian lyrical poems which utilize the symbol of the rose. Meter and Rhyme Scheme The poem has twenty four lines, written in fairly regular iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is aabbccddeeff gghhiijjkkaa, and the use of the rhyming couplets give the poem its euphonic feel. http www.poetry archive.com y to the rose upon the rood of time.html Poetry Archive Commentary and Interpretation The symbol of the rose in To the Rose upon the Rood of Time is firstly one that is constant, binding past and present through its spiritual and romantic referents. Stephen Coote notes that the rose on the rood was a symbol worn around the neck of those belonging to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn the female rose is impaled upon the male cross. The union of these two elements was intended to help the wearer transcend beyond the physical and into the spiritual the rose could also be seen as intellectual, spiritual and eternal beauty impaled upon the world and suffering with mankind as transcendence becomes immanence. As a symbol of constancy, the rose is also the symbol of Yeats s undying love for Maud Gonne, as well as the symbol for Ireland herself as a homeland, suffering and dying on the cross, beautiful, tragic, hoping for resurrection. Although Ireland suffers, she remains eternally beautiful, an unchanging factor that transcends time. Biography He was born on 16 April 1883 on a farm near Bloomington, Illinois . Having an inventive father, William Lee Keeran, C.R. Keeran grew up with a creative spirit. After achieving a master s degree in engineering, he soon began patenting his ideas circa 1906 which continued throughout his lifetime Keeran s 2 piece vacuum seal for Mason jars, which became the standard for home canning, was immediately popular. However, he sold off his company, White Crown Fruit Jar, in order to finance his favorite invention the Eversharp mechanical pencil . Around 1914, Keeran invented the basic mechanism for the Eversharp , thought up the Eversharp trademark inspired by the Winchester Rifle logo , and set up a company to make and sell Eversharp pencils. He relocated to Evanston, Illinois , and entered into a business alliance with the Wahl Adding Machine Company in Chicago. Wahl officers obtained a majority share in the Eversharp Pencil Company and, in 1917, forced Keeran out of the company. In 1919, Keeran registered the Autopoint trademark. In 1921, Keeran joined three businessmen in the Realite Pencil Company. Keeran brought the Autopoint name with him. Within a few years the company was renamed, the Autopoint Company . The Holyrood or Holy Rood is a Christian relic considered to be part of the True Cross on which Jesus died. The word derives from the Old English rood , meaning a cross, or from the Scots language Scots haly ruid holy cross . Several relics venerated as part of the True Cross are known by this name, in England, Ireland and Scotland. Black Rood of Scotland Saint Margaret of Scotland Saint Margaret c.1045 1093 , a Saxon Princess of England , was born in Hungary . Following the conquest of England by the Normans in 1066, she fled to Scotland, where she married Malcolm III of Scotland Malcolm III Canmore , King of Scotland . She is said to have brought the Holy Rood , a fragment of Christ s cross, from Hungary to Scotland with her. It was known as the Black Rood of Scotland , likely for the black case in which it was kept. This relic was removed from Scotland by Edward I of England in 1296, along with the Stone of Scone and other treasures, but the Black Rood was returned in 1328. It was lost to the English again following the battle of Neville s Cross , after which it was held in Durham Cathedral until the English Reformation Reformation of 1540, when it was presumably destroyed. ref cite web url http www.ewtn.com library mary stmarg.htm title Note 10 work Saint Margaret Queen of Scotland last McRoberts first David accessdate 2009 10 07 ref Holy Cross Abbey A fragment of the Holy Rood was brought to a Cistercian Abbey in Thurles , County Tipperary , Ireland by Isabella of Angoul me , widow of King John of England , and thenceforth the Abbey was called Holy Cross Abbey .
