It housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna , Austria . Description The portrait was allegeldy executed in the early 1430, when Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor emperor Sigismund of Luxemburg travelled to Mantua to invest Gianfrancesco Gonzaga of the title of marquess. The emperor had previously sojourned in Milan 1431 , where he had been crowned as King of Italy, and would later move to Rome to meet pope Martin V . The portrait obtained an official status, and was copied several times. In 1451 Piero della Francesca was inspired by it for the features of St. Sigismund of his Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta Praying in Front of St. Sigismund , where he painted the same hat though without the fur filling. The portrait was part of the imperial collection and was housed in the Ambras Castle near Innsbruck , before being acquired by the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The attribution to Pisanello disputed, although supported by a drawing of the emperor, wearing the same hat, by the Italian artist is not ancient, and was previously attributed to Kornad Laib or to a Bohemiam artist.
