He began playing the violin at the age of nine, studying with Harry Horsman and Susan Cheetham, and later studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire with Jacqueline Ross. He learnt to be a Conductor music conductor at the Conservatoire, and joined the CBSO in September 1992. His conducting teachers have included Jonathan Del Mar , Sakari Oramo and Jorma Panula .
