Surname It has been suggested that the surname Rosser was derived from the Welsh ap Rhosyr meaning man of the moors . Citation needed date July 2011 However, the name almost certainly has the same Norman English Welsh origins as Prosser see the section on the origins of this name . Although there were records of ap Rossers son of Rosser from 1400 onwards, the name Rosser without the prefix ap was not commonly used until the 19th Century. Most of Rossers then recorded lived in the Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire industrial valleys. People J. Allyn Rosser , poet J. For the theorem about the sparseness of prime numbers, see Rosser s theorem . For a general introduction to the incompleteness theorems, see G del s incompleteness theorems . This method was introduced by J. Barkley Rosser in 1936, as an improvement of G del s original proof of the incompleteness theorems that was published in 1931. While G del s original proof uses a sentence that says informally This sentence is not provable , Rosser s trick uses a formula that says If this sentence is provable, there is a shorter proof of its negation . Background Rosser s trick begins with the assumptions of G del s incompleteness theorem. Rosser Reeves 10 September 1910 24 January 1984 was an United states American advertising executive and pioneer of television advertising . He believed the purpose of advertising is to sell. He insisted that an advertisement or commercial should show off the value of a product, not the cleverness of a copywriter. His most typical ad is probably that for Anacin , a headache medicine. The ad was considered grating and annoying by almost all viewers but it was remarkably successful, tripling the product s sales. In 7 years the 59 second commercial made more money than the movie Gone With The Wind had in a quarter century. Reeves generated millions for his clients, the Ted Bates executive Ted Bates agency where he rose to chairman existing today as Bates 141 . The AMC program, Mad Men , uses Reeves as one model for the professional accomplishments of the series protagonist, Don Draper Jon Hamm . His ads were focused around what he called the unique selling proposition , the one reason the product needed to be bought or was better than its competitors. Image Confluence.svg right 200px The Church Rosser theorem states that if there are two distinct Lambda calculus Reduction reductions starting from the same lambda calculus term, then there exists a term that is reachable from each reduct via a possibly empty sequence of reductions. This is symbolized by the diagram at right if term a can be reduced to both b and c , then there must be a further term d possibly equal to either b or c to which both b and c can be reduced. Viewing the lambda calculus as an abstract rewriting system , the Church Rosser theorem is a theorem of confluence abstract rewriting confluence . As a consequence of the theorem, a term in the lambda calculus has at most one Beta normal form normal form , justifying reference to the normal form of a certain term. The theorem was proved in 1936 by Alonzo Church and J. Barkley Rosser . The Church Rosser theorem also holds for many variants of the lambda calculus, such as the Simply typed lambda calculus simply typed lambda calculus , many calculi with advanced type systems, and Gordon Plotkin s beta value calculus. Plotkin also used a Church Rosser theorem to prove that the evaluation of functional programs for both lazy evaluation and eager evaluation is a function from programs to values a subset of the lambda terms .
