Rotary polarization is an optical phenomenon occurring in certain crystalline materials. The Polarization waves vibrational direction of light passing through such a crystal or sometimes liquids is rotated so that it varies in a circular manner. The amount of polarization rotation depends on the thickness of the crystal. The rotation may be either to the right dextrorotary d rotary or left levorotary l rotary depending, for example, in quartz on the spiral structure of linked silicon oxygen tetrahedra. Sucrose and camphor are d rotary whereas cholesterol is l rotary. Rotary polarization occurs in molecules and crystals that have no Crystallography crystallographic mirror planes or inversion centers. Such crystals are enantiomorphous the existence of two chemically identical crystal forms as mirror images of each other . Crystalline quartz SiO sub 2 sub exhibits rotary polarization whereas the amorphous forms of silica do not. Quartz plates are used in optical crystallographic microscopy. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 A rotary compression pump works in cycles. Over each cycle a volume is created in contact with the cavity where pressure is to be lowered. By random motion, molecules from the vacuum pass into the volume created by the pump. This volume is then cut off from the cavity and compressed in contact with a one way valve. If the volume is compressed enough some of the molecules will pass through the valve. The maximum efficiency of a rotary compression pump is the ratio between the volume in contact with the vacuum and the smallest contracted volume in contact with the valve. If the ratio is 1 1000 and the pump is exhausting to atmospheric pressure, the highest achievable vacuum is 1 1000 of atmospheric pressure. This corresponds to 0.76 Torr or 101.3 Pascal pressure Pa . This limitation makes rotary compression pumps very hard to construct if lower pressures than about 1 Torr is to be achieved. Rotary Storage Systems Rotary storage systems are filing cabinets specialised office furniture units usually consisting of a double sided rotating unit, allowing the user to access two full sides of filing from one point. A foot pedal or lever is often used to operate the rotation mechanism, thus allowing user easy control. Capacity, Siting and Speed Advantages Many rotary filing systems can store the contents of seventeen four drawer filing cabinets in just three eight tier units, allowing multiple times the storage volume created by traditional filing cabinets . A wide range of fitments makes the systems suitable for storing a vast array file types and multimedia. For security, each unit can invariably be locked individually. Rotary storage systems usually have no shutters or doors, thereby can be sitied very close to walls or partitioning, giving a very efficient use of floor space. Units are often used to divide office space. Rotary storage units can allow faster file access than banks of conventional cabinets as 50 of stored items are immediately visible to the operator, the rest typically being a pedal push away. Unreferenced date April 2008 A rotary switch is a switch operated by rotation. These are often chosen when more than 2 positions are needed, such as a three speed fan implement fan or a CB radio with multiple frequency frequencies of reception or channels . Image rotaryswitch.gif thumb 360px Three deck rotary switch allows controlling three different circuit functions A rotary switch consists of a spindle tool spindle or wikt rotor rotor that has a contact arm or spoke which projects from its surface like a cam. It has an array of terminals, arranged in a circle around the rotor, each of which serves as a contact for the spoke through which any one of a number of different electrical circuit s can be connected to the rotor. The switch is layered to allow the use of multiple poles, each layer is equivalent to one pole. Usually such a switch has a detent mechanism so it clicks from one active position to another rather than stalls in an intermediate position. Thus a rotary switch provides greater Switch Contact arrangements pole and throw capabilities than simpler switches do. Rotary switches were used as channel selector s on television receivers until the early 1970s, as range selectors on electrical metering equipment, as band selectors on multi band radios, etc. Modern rotary switches utilise a star wheel mechanism to provide the switching positions. 30,45,60 or 90 degrees. Nylon cams are then mounted behind this mechanism and spring loaded electrical contacts slide around these cams. The cams are notched or cut where the contact should close to complete an electrical circuit. Some rotary switches are user configurable in relation to the number of positions. Multiple issues orphan February 2009 cleanup January 2009 refimprove January 2009 Rotary Inertia or rotational inertia is a further analogy of inertia in which a rotating body maintains its state of uniform rotational motion. Thus its angular momentum would be unchanged, unless an external torque were to be applied. Rotary inertia often has hidden practical consequences. In the braking of a railway train, arresting the linear motion would require that the substantial rotational inertia of the motors must be converted to some other forms of energy, thus causing acoustic vibration of the wheels and frictional heating of the brakes on the railway carriage. Rotary Inertia is also found in the Timoshenko beam theory , a theory for a model that considers rotary inertia and shear stress to describe the vibrations of thick bars, which are part of the mallet subfamily of the percussion family of musical instruments e.g. vibraphone , xylophone and marimba . In common usage, the term rotary stage may or may not also include the mechanism by which the angular position of the platform is controlled relative to the base. Principle of operation In three dimensional space, an object may either rotate about, or translate along any of three axes. Thus the object is said to have six degrees of freedom 3 rotational and 3 translational . A rotary stage exhibits only one degree of freedom rotation about one axis . In other words, rotary stages operate by physically restricting 3 axes of translation and 2 axes of rotation. Bearing types Rotary stages consist of a platform that moves relative to a base. The platform and base are joined by some form of Bearing mechanical bearing which restricts motion of the platform to rotation about a single axis. A variety of different styles of bearings are used, each with benefits and drawbacks making them more appropriate for some applications than for others. Plain bearing A plain bearing is simply two surfaces sliding against each other. Typically a circular step on the platform mates snugly with a circular depression in the base allowing free rotation while minimizing side to side motion. A rotary stage built with this type of bearing is usually only used for coarse positioning and is adjusted manually simply by turning the platform ... repeatable positioning of the platform relative to the base. Rolling element bearing This type of rotary ... to the base. Position control methods Manual direct Some rotary stages are operated simply by turning ... manual worm drive scenario a stepper motor allows positioning of the rotary stage to be automated ... more details
Image Gallatin rotary.jpg thumb 250px Rotary jail in Gallatin, Missouri A Rotary jail was an architectural design for some prisons in the US Midwest during the late 19th century. Cells in the jails were arranged so that they rotated in a carousel fashion allowing only one cell at a time to be accessible from the single opening per level. Design and patent The rotary jail was initially designed by architect William H. Brown, and built by the Haugh, Ketcham & Co. iron foundry in the Indianapolis, Indiana neighborhood of Haughville.
