The RoyalSociety of Portrait Painters is a British association of portrait painters which holds an annual exhibition at the Federation of British Artists Mall Galleries in London . Members use the initials RP after their names. History The RoyalSociety of Portrait Painters was founded in 1891 by 24 artists who were dissatisfied with the selection policies of the Royal Academy for its annual exhibition in London. They formed themselves, as the Society of Portrait Painters, into a new body to be concerned solely with portrait painting. The Society was, and is, formed of members elected, on the basis of the quality of their work, by existing members. Members have an automatic right to display paintings at the annual exhibition, but most of the exhibits are selected, in addition, from non members of the society who submit their best recent portrait work for show. The first exhibition of the Society was held in 1891. The catalogue of that exhibition shows that its committee then consisted of Archibald Stuart Wortley painter Archibald Stuart Wortley Chairman , Hon. John Collier artist John Collier , Arthur Hacker , G. P. Jacomb Hood, Simeon Solomon S.J. Solomon , James Jebusa Shannon and Hubert Vos. The other members listed were Percy Bigland, C. A. The Royal India Society was a 20th century British learned society concerned with India . Ceelo Green The society was founded in 1910 by Ananda Coomaraswamy , and others, as the India Society. Sedgwick reports Coomaraswamy s stimulus as follows In 1910 he became involved in a very public controversy, played out in the correspondence columns of The Times and elsewhere, on the status of Indian art. This had started when Sir George Birdwood , while chairing the Indian Section of the annual meeting of the RoyalSociety of Arts, had announced that there was no fine art in India and had somewhat unwisely responded to the suggestion that a particular statue of the Buddha was an example of fine art This senseless similitude, in its immemorial fixed pose, is nothing more than an uninspired brazen image. . . . A boiled suet pudding would serve equally well as a symbol of passionless purity and serenity of soul. This controversy culminated in the foundation of the India Society, later the Royal India Society, to combat the views of the Birdwoods of this world. Coomaraswamy played a major part in this endeavor. In 1944 the Society was granted permission to become The Royal India Society under the patronage of the Dowager Queen Mary of Teck . After partition, its name was again changed to the Royal India and Pakistan Society, and then again to the Royal India, Pakistan, and Ceylon Society. In 1966 it merged with the East India Association . References Review of Coomaraswamy by Roger Lipsey reviewed by K. R. Norman , Modern Asian Studies , Vol. 15, No. 2 1981 , pp. 339 341. FRSSA redirects here. Not to be confused with FRSSAf, a Fellow of the RoyalSociety of South Africa . The Royal Scottish Society of Arts is a learned society in Scotland , dedicated to the study of science and technology . It was founded as The Society for the Encouragement of the Useful Arts in Scotland by Sir David Brewster in 1821 and dedicated to the promotion of invention and Entrepreneur enterprise . The Society was granted a Royal Charter in 1841. For many years the promotion of invention and improvements of all sorts was the main business of the Society, and its meetings were the focus of a large and active cross section of Edinburgh society academics, gentry, professionals such as civil engineers and lawyers, and skilled craftsmen such as instrument makers, engravers and printers. The Society s published Transactions provide a fascinating record of changes in technology, and the Society s extensive archive publicly accessible in the National Library of Scotland is a valuable resource used by researchers. In more recent times, the Society s meeting programme has been based on lectures given by expert and often distinguished speakers. The lectures cover a wide range of scientific and technical topics, but still with the original aim of keeping the membership informed about current concerns in science, engineering, medicine, and often with a topical edge. Meetings of the Society are held in Edinburgh monthly, at 7pm on Monday evenings, from October or November to May or June. In addition, organised visits are made each year to a research, manufacturing or industrial establishment.
