  1. Smart rubber

Smart rubber is a polymer that is able to heal when torn. The edges of a tear can be held together, and they will simply re bond into apparent solidity. How it works This is done by producing a polymer that depends only on hydrogen bond ing to hold itself together, rather than also on covalent bond ing and ionic bond ing, which are present in normal rubber. Unlike the latter two types, hydrogen bonding can occur simply by pressing two faces of a substance together. Real world versions Materials of this type are still in development, for example a type invented at the Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher Educational Institution ESPCI in Paris, France . Their translucent, yellowish brown rubber is synthesized from fatty acid s and urea . It is still too soft for most anticipated practical applications, like rubber gloves and shoe soles http technology.newscientist.com channel tech dn13354 smart rubber promises selfmending products.html?feedId online news rss20 . Among the potential problems of the material is that it would also bond to itself any other way it came into contact, like upon closing the fingers or hand of a glove. This may be solved by coating objects made from the rubber with some other polymer, so that the smart rubber is only exposed when torn. chemistry stub polymer stub Category Rubber Category Smart materials ...   more details

  1. Rubber pants

Image Gummihose 6.jpg thumb 250px Rubber pants about 1950 Rubber pants or rubber panties were the predecessor to plastic pants and served the purpose of a diaper cover, replacing the woolen garment. However, rubber pants is still a generic term for any pull on or snap on incontinence protective garment. Lacking a fly front, the traditional variant is a true panty. As an infants garment they had fallen out of favor in the 1950s, but were still the primary adult incontinence protective garment and in that role were called rubber bloomers . Rubber pants for infants wear over cloth diapers fell into two categories. Some were made of natural rubber and had rubber gathers at the waist and legs. The rubber pant itself was sized generously so the stretchy characteristic of rubber was not utilized and some air circulation took place within the oversized pants. Some were made of latex rubber that utilized the stretchy characteristic and fit very snugly over the diaper, leaving no air space. Perhaps the best known of these stretchy latex pants were introduced by Playtex . Playtex baby pants stretched over the diaper much like rubber gloves are stretched over a hand. Undersized leg holes and waist opening allowed the stretchy latex rubber to seal against the skin to contain diaper wetness and therefore protect what ever the baby was placed upon. Ventilation was supposedly provided by two slots holes in the front of the pants up near the waist but they did little more than allow leakage onto the bed when baby slept on its stomach. 1. Dead rubber

unreferenced date May 2011 Dead rubber is a term used in sport ing parlance to describe a game match in a playoff format series where the series result has already been decided by earlier matches. The dead rubber match therefore has no effect on the winner and loser of the series, other than the number of matches won and lost. The term is widely used in Davis Cup and Fed Cup tennis , as well as in international cricket and field hockey series. For example, in Davis Cup series , each pair of competing countries play five matches rubbers where the winner is decided on a best of five basis. Where the result is known before the completion of the five matches if one side accumulates an unassailable number of victories three , the remaining match or matches are said to be dead rubbers . Because the result of a dead rubber match is unimportant in the series result, winning teams in one sided competitions sometimes have difficulty in completing a clean sweep of the series. This is because often dead rubber matches are played in a less intense atmosphere, thus allowing the lesser team to sneak a win. Sometimes, a second string player who has not played much in top level competition is used to play a dead rubber in order to gain experience. 1. Crumb rubber

Crumb rubber is a term usually applied to recycled rubber from automotive and truck scrap tires . During the recycling process steel and fluff is removed leaving tire rubber with a granular consistency. Continued processing with a granulator and or cracker mill, possibly with the aid of cryogenics or mechanical means, reduces the size of the particles further. The particles are sized and classified based on various criteria including color black only or black and white . The granulate is sized by passing through a Mechanical screening screen , the size based on a dimension 1 4 or mesh holes per inch 10, 20, etc. . Crumb rubber is often used in astroturf as cushioning, where it is sometimes referred to as astro dirt. Mesh refers to material that has been sized by passing through a screen with a given number of holes per inch. For example, 10 mesh crumb rubber has passed through a screen with 10 holes per inch resulting in rubber granulate that is slightly less than 1 10 of an inch. The exact size will depend on the size of wire used in the screen.
