Unreferenced date May 2010 Heriz rugs are Persian rugs from the area of Heris, East Azerbaijan in northwest Iran , northeast of Tabriz . Such rugs are produced in the village of the same name in the slopes of Mount Sabalan. Heriz carpets are extremely durable and hard wearing and they can last for generations. 19th century examples of such carpets are often found on sale by major auction houses in United States and Europe. New Herizes are thick, tough, and often reasonable in price. Such rugs age well and become more and more beautiful with age. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan sits on a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water of sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas. Citation needed date May 2010 Heriz rug weavers often make them in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the field. Such designs are traditional and often woven from memory. Similar rugs from the neighbouring towns and villages of Ahar, Heris, Mehraban, Sarab , Bakhshaish, and Gorevan are often marketed as Heriz but compare poorly with original Herizes. Citation needed date May 2010 Heriz rugs are of coarse construction. The rugs range from 30 Knots per sq cm kpsi on the low end to 100&ndash 10 kpsi on the high end. It is rare to see a rug over 100 kpsi that would look like an authentic Heriz unless it is an antique silk Heriz. The designs tend to come from settled tribal weavers so they mimic Qashqai, Khamseh , Afshar, Abadeh and Luri designs. Since the weavers are using fixed looms the rugs tend to be larger and often coarser than their tribal counterparts. Shiraz rugs are not often very finely knotted, with both Qashqai and Abadeh both having a finer knot. Shiraz utilizes the Persian asymmetrical knot. Shiraz is a city in the south west region of Iran, sited practically upon the old Persian Persepolis. Shiraz rugs are not usually made in a large factory, with the majority of them being woven by home weavers and taken into the main bazaar to be sold, most often, to traders who will group a sizeable range of these rugs and sell them to smaller traders or export them. Appearance The design is geometric, sometimes featuring a pole medallion in the centre. Shiraz carpets use red and brown colors and often use diamond shaped lozanges as the primary motif. Borders often have smaller bands around a larger band with palm and pine leaf designs. Some pieces feature Cyrus white horse. A Pakistani rug or Pakistani carpet is a type of hand made floor covering textile traditionally made in Pakistan . History The art of weaving developed in the region comprising Pakistan at a time when few other civilizations employed it. Excavations at Moenjodaro and Harappa ancient cities of the Indus Valley Civilization Indus Valley civilization have established that the inhabitants used spindles and spun a wide variety of weaving materials. Some historians consider that the Indus Valley civilization first developed the use of woven textiles. Carpet weaving may have been introduced into the area of present day Pakistan as far back as the eleventh century with the coming of the first Muslim conquerors, the Afghan Ghaznavids and the Ghaurids. It can with more certainty be traced to the beginning of List of Mughal emperors the Mughal Dynasty in the early sixteenth century, when the last successor of Timur, Babur, extended his rule from Kabul , Afghanistan to India and found the Mughal Empire . Under the patronage of the Mughals, Indian craftsmen adopted Persian techniques and designs. Carpets woven in the Punjab at that time often called Lahore carpets today made use of motifs and decorative styles found in Mughal architecture . During the Mughal period, the carpets made on the Indian subcontinent became so famous that demand for them spread abroad. These carpets had distinctive designs and boasted a high density of knots. Carpets made for the Mughal emperors, including Jahangir and Shah Jahan , were of the finest quality. Under Shah Jahan s reign, Mughal carpet weaving took on a new aesthetic and entered its classical phase. Soumak Soumakh, Sumak rugs are a type of Oriental rug belonging to the family of flat weaves. The technique of making a soumak involves wrapping weft s over four warp weaving warps before drawing them back under the last two warps. The process is repeated from selvedge to selvedge. Soumaks tend to be finely woven, and although not as durable as piled carpets, they are stronger than kilim s. They are made in the Caucasus , southern Persia and Anatolia , by the Shahsavan tribe in north western Persia, and very rarely, by the Baloch people Baloch on the Persia Afghanistan border. Sizes vary, from carpet format to tiny tribal domestic bags. Unlike the kilim, which is usually reversible, weft strands on the underside of a soumakh may be left uncut several inches long, possibly in order to provide extra warmth. ref cite book first Andrew last Middleton title Rugs & Carpets location London year 1996 ref References references Category Persian rugs textile stub ... more details

About the general type of rug the specific carpet The Ardabil Carpet Ardabil rugs originate from Ardabil located in the province of Ardabil Province in northwestern Iran, 639 kilometers from Tehran. Ardabil has a long and illustrious history of Azerbaijani carpet weaving. The reign of the Safavid Dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries represented the peak of Azerbaijani carpet making in the region. The name Ardabil comes from the Avesta The sacred book of Zoroastrians with the word Artavil literally meaning a tall holy place. The weavers in Ardabil ply their craft using Azerbaijani knots. One of the most famous carpets in existence today is a pair of Ardabil Carpet Persian carpets from Ardabil . This carpet, measuring 34 x 17 , is hanging on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London , England. Ardabil rugs feature motifs that are very similar to Caucasian rugs, but with more motifs and objects woven into the borders. The colors are also lighter. The patterns are predominantly geometric and the most common layouts on Ardabil rugs are medallions, multiple connected diamond shaped medallions, and all over octagonal shapes. The most recognized design found on Ardabil rugs is the famous Mahi Herati design a diamond medallion and small fish throughout. Some modern weavers have begun to favor bold geometric patterns over the traditional Mahi Herati design and have added colors such as turquoise and purple to the more traditional red, pink, ivory, green, and blue. The warp on Ardabil rugs is mostly cotton, while the weft is either cotton or wool, although silk is also used as weft on fine Ardabil rugs.
