Capt Guy E Ruggles Brise 15 June 1914 14 November 2000 , Soldier, countryman and High Sheriff of Essex Guy Edward Ruggles Brise born in 1914 the second son of Sir Edward Archibald Ruggles Brise ,MC,TD,JP,DL. He came from a landed family who had lived at Spains Hall, Finchingfield, Essex, since the 18th century. The original house can be traced to the Domesday survey. He was schooled at Eton College like his elder brother John Ruggles Brise and joined the 104th Essex Yeomanry Field Brigade RA. In 1940 he was sent for Commando training to Scotland, where he met his future wife Elizabeth Knox, and they married soon after. As a Captain he departed with No 7 Commando for North Africa, where he was captured during the raid on Bardia in 1941, handed over to the Italians and transferred to Naples by ship. As a prisoner of war he was held at camp PG35 at Padula near Salerno from May 1942 until June 1943. After the Allies invaded Italy he was sent to PG19 camp further north at Bologna before being transferred to Castello di Vincigliata PG12 in the latter days before the Italian armistice. The castle held some the highest ranking British and Commonwealth officers captured in WWII many during the campaigns in North Africa. They included Lieutenant General Sir Philip Neame VC, Air Marshal Owen Tudor Boyd , General Sir Richard Nugent O Connor as well as an old school friend Daniel Knox, 6th Earl of Ranfurly . br He was amongst the small party including some NCO s released by General Chiapati in September 1943. Kitson , was an American sculptor. Kitson was born in Brookline, Massachusetts . As a young child she displayed artistic talent, but when her mother attempted to enroll her in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston , she was informed that she was too young to be admitted. Her mother then approached other schools, which gave her the same advice. One of the school directors, however, suggested that she find a tutor for her and pointed her in the direction of a rising star, Henry Hudson Kitson. She began studying with sculptor Henry Hudson Kitson in 1886, and married him in Boston in 1893 in the social event of the season. In 1895 she was the first woman to be admitted to the National Sculpture Society . In 1888, she won honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Francais, the youngest woman ever to receive the honor . She was lionized when she returned to the United States for this award and was asked to comment on everything from the state of American art to men s fashions. and in 1904 won a bronze medal at the St. Louis World s Fair . After the Kitsons separated in 1909, she moved to Farmington, where she maintained a studio until her 1932 death in Boston, Massachusetts . In the course of her career she created many public monuments, both in conjunction with her husband and on her own. Her best known statue is The Hiker , a monument commemorating the soldiers who fought in the wars of the United States turn of the 20th Century Manifest Destiny territorial expansion, the Spanish American War , the Philippine American War and the Boxer Rebellion . Timothy Ruggles March 7, 1776 &ndash February 21, 1831 was a merchant, farmer and political figure in Nova Scotia . He represented Granville township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1818 to 1831. He was born in Granville, Nova Scotia , the son of Timothy Ruggles and the grandson of the loyalist general Timothy Ruggles . He married Jane, the daughter of Edward Thorne .
