Cockspur Rum is one of the many popular rum beverages from the Eastern Caribbean island nation of Barbados . It has been produced by Hanschell Inniss Ltd. since 1884. Barbados is considered the birthplace of rumbullion as it was originally called nearly 350 years ago. Danish merchant Valdemar Hanschell established a liquor store in the 19th century which became the birthplace of Cockspur Rum. Cockspur blends its rum while aging it in oak barrels using the pure coral water of the Caribbean, a unique ingredient known to Cockspur. Cockspur contains forty percent alcohol by volume. Cockspur is Barbados leading golden rum and has won numerous awards internationally. These awards include the International Wine and Spirit Competition s Gold Medal in 1981, 1984, and 1989. It is considered a five star rum with a proud rooster as its emblem. Cockspur has recently entered a three year deal with the England and Wales Cricket Board ECB to sponsor the National Club Championship. This has been renamed the Cockspur Cup for 2004. The maritime limit was 3 miles prior to April 21, 1924, and 12 miles thereafter. These lines became established near major U.S. ports so that Rum running rum runners could load cargoes of alcoholic beverage s from these freight ships and sneak them into port.
