Similarity Matrix of Proteins , or SIMAP , is a database of protein similarities created using distributed computing, which is freely accessible for scientific purposes. SIMAP uses the FASTA algorithm to precalculate protein similarity, while another application uses hidden Markov model s to search for Protein domain s. SIMAP is a joint project of the Technical University of Munich , the Helmholtz Zentrum M nchen , and the University of Vienna . The project usually gets new work units at the beginning of each month. More recently, 2010 , inclusion of environmental sequences into the database has required longer periods of activity, several months of continuous work for example. Typically, these updates occur twice each year. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the project relocated to the University of Vienna due to the failing electrical infrastructure at the Technical University of Munich ref http boincsimap.org boincsimap old news.php ref . Facts The Spanish legislation that implemented the Working Time Directive applied only to private sector workers. The question was if Spanish doctors in the Sindicato de M dicos de Asistencia P blica were engaged in public sector work described as in regulation 18 2 a now updated through Article 17 , which gave examples of the armed forces and police. Judgment The European Court of Justice held that health care workers could not be assimilated to such activities to fall within the exception for essential public sector workers like the armed forces. According to the general principles of construction, it is clear both from the object of the basic Directive, namely to encourage improvement in the safety and health of workers at work, and from the wording of Article 2 1 thereof, that it must necessarily be broad in scope. It follows that the exceptions to the scope of the basic Directive, including that provided for in Article 1 3 must be interpreted restrictively. This meant that time doctors spent on call where they were obliged to respond to requests for home visits and urgent requests was working time and so time going over the 48 hour ceiling violated the Directive. Peptide sequence or amino acid sequence is the order in which amino acid residues, connected by peptide bond s, lie in the chain in peptide s and protein s . The sequence is generally reported from the N terminal end containing free amino group to the C terminal end containing free carboxyl group . Peptide sequence is often called protein sequence if it represents the primary structure of a protein . Sequence notation and applications Many peptide sequences have been in sequence database s. These databases may use various notations to describe the peptide sequence. The full names of the amino acids are rarely given instead, Amino acid Table of standard amino acid abbreviations and properties 3 letter or 1 letter abbreviations are usually recorded for conciseness. Several deductions can be made from the sequence itself. Long stretches of hydrophobic residues may indicate transmembrane helix transmembrane helices . These helices may indicate the peptide is a cell receptor . Certain residues indicate a beta sheet area. If full length protein sequence is available, it is possible to estimate the isoelectric point of the protein. Methods for determining the peptide sequence include deduction from DNA sequence, Edman degradation , and mass spectrometry . Techniques in sequence analysis can be applied to learn more about the peptide. These techniques generally consist of comparing the sequence to other sequences from sequence databases. Other sequences may have already been studied and determined to be significant. Findings about these sequences may be applicable to the sequence under investigation. Facts A doctor remained on call between shifts and was given a room to sleep in at the hospital. The collective agreement said the average time working when on call periods between 16 and 25 hours should not exceed 49 of the on call period. Dr Jaeger argued that all on call time should be regarded as working time. The Bundesarbeitsgericht asked for a preliminary ruling, asking whether under art 3 and art 6 of 93 104 EC time spent on call was working time as implemented by the Law on Working Time 1994 5 III in Germany . The law said Dr Jaeger had to stay at work, but could sleep there if not required to work. On average, Dr Jaeger did spend 49 of his time on call. The time spent inactive was deemed to be a rest period. Judgment The European Court of Justice held that all time he was required to be at the hospital, even when sleeping, was to be regarded as working time.
