Founded in 1957 to provide secondary education to pupils who live near Cochrane Road. The school was inaugurated on 1 September 1965 by Datuk Harun bin Idris , Menteri Besar of Selangor at that time. It offers classes for students from Form 1 to Form 6. Since 1994, the school changed it status from a boys school to a co ed secondary school. br br It was situated on Jalan Cochrane before the school was relocated to a new building in Jalan Shahbandar in late 2004. The school was renamed to SMK Cochrane as it is no longer situated on Jalan Cochrane. The new school building was official opened on 4 February 2005 by Dato Seri Hishammuddin Hussein , Minister of Education. The school, like the road it was once situated on before, was named after the British Chief Secretary and British Resident of Perak, Charles Walter Hamilton Cochrane . br br The old structure on Jalan Cochrane is now called the Cochrane Youth Sports Centre dedicated to the development of young talented sportsmen. At that time, there was only one block and five Sisters as teachers. There were only 36 students in the first batch. Japanese occupation During the Japanese occupation, the school was used as a shelter for sisters and orphans from Taiping and Singapore . After the Japanese left on the 1 October 1945, the school was reopened and 800 new students were accepted, and the school continued to expand. New school A new school was built because the land on which the Convent stood was taken by Metrojaya for development. Development, however, was stalled leaving an abandoned project. This was due to the stagnation of water, three storeys deep. The developers abandoned the site which now sits as a huge, unused lake in the centre of town. A plot of land near Taman AST was chosen to build the new school. On the 8 July 1993, the ground breaking ceremony was performed by the Menteri Besar, YAB Dato Seri Utama Sri Mohd Isa Bin Dato Haji Abdul Samad. The school was renamed SMK Puteri .
