Onesource date June 2008 Blackbird Hundred is the name of an unincorporated subdivision of New Castle County, Delaware New Castle County , Delaware . Hundred division Hundred s were once used as a basis for representation in the Delaware General Assembly , and while their names still appear on all real estate transactions, they presently have no meaningful use or purpose except as a geographical point of reference. Boundaries and Formation Blackbird Hundred is that portion of New Castle County that lies south of Blackbird Creek and Cypress Creek, a tributary of the Chester River . Very small portions of the towns of Smyrna, Delaware Smyrna and Clayton, Delaware Clayton , both primarily in Kent County, Delaware Kent County , are the only towns or named communities in Blackbird Hundred. It was formed from Appoquinimink Hundred in 1875 and was named for Blackbird Creek that flows along its northern boundary. Development Blackbird Hundred remains mostly rural. Geography Important geographical features, in addition to Blackbird Creek, include the Delaware River , which forms its eastern boundary, the Smyrna River, formerly known as Duck Creek, which forms its southern boundary, and the North West Branch of the Smyrna River. It is entirely in the coastal plain region on the Delmarva Peninsula . Transportation Important roads include portions of the Beach Highway Delaware Route 1 , the DuPont Highway U.S. Route 13 , and the Thoroughfare Neck Road Delaware Route 9 . Chief Blackbird Wash ing guhsah ba ca. 1750 &ndash 1800 was the leader of the Omaha tribe Omaha Native Americans in the United States Native American Indian tribe who commanded the trade routes used by Spain Spanish , France French , United Kingdom British and later United States American traders until the late 18th century. He was one of the first of the Plains Indian chiefs to trade with white explorers and also believed to be the first of the Plains Indian chiefs to openly question white encroachment. Blackbird used trade as a means to prosperity for his people and as a way to ensure white explorers were aware that they were the guests. The Omaha were not warlike people, yet they were the first on the Great Plains to have mastered equestrianism around 1770 and were at one point, while Chief Blackbird was alive, the most powerful Indian tribe in the Great Plains. Chief Blackbird died during a smallpox epidemic in 1800. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition members were led to Chief Blackbird s burial site, which sits on a bluff on the west side of the Missouri River , in present day Nebraska .
