Leo of Chalcedon was an 11th century Eastern Orthodox bishop at Chalcedon who opposed the appropriation of church treasures by Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos between 1081 and 1091. Alexios I was in a desperate situation upon ascending the throne in 1081. With the Byzantine Norman Wars draining what little money remained in the imperial treasury, and Robert Guiscard marching across the Balkans , Alexios was forced to assemble a synod of Greek ecclesiastics who authorised him to employ the wealth gathered as offerings in the churches for public service. This act was violently opposed by many of the clergy, with Leo, Bishop of Chalcedon being among the most prominent. Leo declared that the government had committed sacrilege in melting down sacred objects which were entitled to the adoration of Christians. Leo s opposition forced the emperor to back down temporarily in 1082. The resumption of confiscations soon after and the lack of resistance by Patriarch of Constantinople Patriarch Nicholas III of Constantinople Nicholas III and the other leading bishops led Leo to break Communion Christian communion with the patriarchate in 1084. Alexios took advantage of his claims that seemed to attribute more than orthodox importance to these objects. In 1086 another synod was convened in which the emperor s brother, the Sebastokrator Isaac Komnenos played a leading role, assembling the Patristic texts for the trial, ref Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, pg. 1144 ref and Leo s opinions were condemned as heretical. The synod indicted and deposed him before being banished to Sozopolis where the locals regarded him as a saint. Though Alexios published a decree justifying the secularization of church treasures, the public outcry was so great that he issued a golden bull ordering restitution to be made for all the sacred plate already employed for the state, and declaring it to be sacrilege for any one in future to apply church treasures for secular uses. Eventually Leo was reconci ... more details

Acts of Reparation The Golden Arrow Holy Face Devotion is a prayer in the Roman Catholic Church which is believed to have been dictated by Jesus to Sr. Marie of St Peter and of the Holy Family, a Carmelite nun of Tours, in 1843. It is an Act of Praise and Reparation for Blasphemy. It is also a reparation for the profanation of Sunday and the Holy Days of Obligation. On March 16, 1844 Jesus reportedly told Sr. Marie Oh if you only knew what great merit you acquire by saying even once, Admirable is the Name of God , in a spirit of reparation for blasphemy. He told her that the two sins which offend Him the most grievously are blasphemy and the profanation of Sunday. Our Lord called this prayer the Golden Arrow , saying that those who would recite it would pierce Him delightfully, and also heal those other wounds inflicted on Him by the malice of sinners. Sr. Mary of St. Peter saw, streaming from the Sacred Heart of Jesus, delightfully wounded by this Golden Arrow, torrents of graces for the conversion of sinners. This prayer is part of the Roman Catholic devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus and appears in the book The Golden Arrow , the autobiography of Sr. Marie of St Peter . In her book she wrote that in her visions Jesus told her that an act of sacrilege or blasphemy is like a poisoned arrow , hence the name Golden Arrow for this reparatory prayer. Image SrMarieofStPeter.jpg thumb Sister Marie of St Peter with the Golden Arrow. The three rings symbolize the Holy Trinity Words of the prayer May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. The main objective of the demonstration was to express outrage at John Cardinal O Connor s opposition to the teaching of safe sex in the public school system, as well as his opposition to abortion. O Connor had recently been appointed to then President Ronald Reagan s Aids Task Force and had gained unprecedented influence over the public school system, which many protestors perceived as a violation the the separation of church and state. The protest was condemned widely, not only by local politicians but President George H.W. Bush , Senator Alphonse D Amato , Mayor Ed Koch and other national figures. It became the pervasive subject in the news throughout the week in the US and was headline news in several European countries. Camille Paglia wrote in a December 2008 Salon.com Salon column that a consecrated Sacramental bread host was desecrated by a protester, an act considered by Catholics to be an outrageous sacrilege . However, the protestors were greatly admired by many in the gay community, including John Rechy , who praised the action. A short Documentary film documentary about the protest, titled Stop the Church , was originally scheduled to air on Public Broadcasting Service PBS . The documentary was eventually dropped from national broadcast by PBS, but still aired on public television stations in several major cities including New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles . ref Steinfels, Peter. On 6 July 1603 he complained to Gilbert Talbot, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury that the chancellor of the diocese, Zachary Babington, had obstructed his suit and dispossessed him of his divinity lectureship. In 1610 he was appointed to the bishopric of Derry, after some opposition from supporters of Dean William Webb. He was consecrated at Drogheda , and died in 1611, probably on 10 September. Philip O Sullivan Beare tells the story that his death was ascribed to a divine punishment for his sacrilege in attempting to burn a statue of the Virgin Mary, which, however, remained unconsumed, while the perpetrators of the outrage were either struck dead on the spot, or, like the bishop himself, died a lingering death.
