Its capture by the France French was the reason for the construction of the more famous Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Brimstone Hill Fortress , which overlooks it. It was a suitable site, as ships were often becalmed beneath it, when making for Sandy Point Road. It was named after King Charles II, who gave 500 to assist the planters. Charles Fort was a military post from 1670 until it was abandoned in 1854. Some forty years later in 1890 it was used as a Hansen Home leper asylum . The Home was closed in 1996. The fort today is not in good shape. It has been completely abandoned and is overgrown with vegetation. The British were victorious. On the morning of 25 November 1837, 2 days after Charles Stephen Gore Charles Gore s defeat at the Battle of Saint Denis and the retreat to Sorel, Quebec Sorel the troops of Colonel George Augustus Wetherall George Wetherall about 420 regulars from the 1st Regiment of Foot 1st and 66th Regiment of Foot 66th Regiments of Foot , left St Hilaire and marched on the camp at St Charles.     Charles de Saint Ours August 24, 1753 &ndash November 11, 1834 was a seigneurial system of New France seigneur and political figure in Lower Canada . He was born Roch Louis de Saint Ours in the town of Quebec City Quebec in 1753. He became a major in the militia in 1774 and took part in the defence of Fort St John s later Saint Jean sur Richelieu against the United States Americans . He was taken prisoner, returned to Province of Quebec 1763 1791 Quebec in 1777 and became a lieutenant in the Canadian volunteers. He was named aide de camp to Governor Sir Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester Guy Carleton and also served as aide de camp for Prince William Henry, who later became William IV of the United Kingdom William IV , during his visit to the province in 1787. In 1792, he inherited parts of the seigneuries of Saint Ours, L Assomption, and Deschaillons he eventually acquired all of the seigneury of Saint Ours. Around 1792, he married Josette Murray, whose great uncle was former governor James Murray military officer James Murray . He became a captain in the regular army in 1795, later retiring on half pay.
