He was sent as naturalist with Captain Nicolas Baudin s expedition to Australia in 1798, but left the vessel at Mauritius , and spent two years in exploring R union and other islands in the Indian Ocean . Joining the army on his return, he was present at the battle of Ulm and battle of Austerlitz , and in 1808 went to Spain with Jean de Dieu Soult Marshal Soult . In 1815 , he supported Napoleon and opposed the House of Bourbon Bourbons . Consequently he was proscribed after the Bourbon restoration. But after several years of exile, he was allowed to return quietly to Paris in 1820. In 1829 he headed a scientific expedition to the Peloponnese , and in 1839 he had charge of the exploration of Algeria . The original church structure was completed in 1847 but was destroyed in the disastrous fire of 1881 which leveled a significant portion of the city. The current church was built in 1884 out of seven types of Italian marble. St. JeanBaptiste is a small community in Manitoba . It is located along Highway 75, 40 km north of Emerson at the United States border, and 60 km south of the city of Winnipeg, in the Rural Municipality of Montcalm . The community has a distinct French Canadian flavour. The area was first settled by M tis families from St. Norbert, Manitoba and, in 1878, French Canadian families from the United States arrived in the area and purchased land. The Post Office opened in 1877 and a parish and Canadian National railway point were also part of the early development. The community was originally called Grosse Pointe. It became Mission de la Rivi re aux Prunes and received its present name from Archbishop Alexandre Antonin Tach Tach in 1872. It has since then been known as St. JeanBaptiste or St. Jean. He was born at Petite C te in Saint Laurent, Quebec Saint Laurent , Lower Canada on the Island of Montreal in 1796, the son of Jean Meilleur, and studied at the Petit S minaire de Montr al and an English language English school in Montreal . Meilleur studied at the Castleton Academy of Medicine and Middlebury College at Montpelier in Vermont and then at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire , receiving an Doctor of Medicine M.D. in 1825. He was qualified to practice in Lower Canada the following year and set up practice at L Assomption, Quebec L Assomption . In 1827, he married Jos phine no, dit Deschamps, the daughter of Antoine H nault. He served as a lieutenant in the local militia, later being commissioned as a surgeon for the militia. He was named to the Medical Board for Montreal district and also was a justice of the peace and the postmaster at L Assomption.
