His personal name is variously reported, including Jean Baptiste Marcellin and Jean Baptiste George Marie . Biography He was born at Agen . He was sent as naturalist with Captain Nicolas Baudin s expedition to Australia in 1798, but left the vessel at Mauritius , and spent two years in exploring R union and other islands in the Indian Ocean . Joining the army on his return, he was present at the battle of Ulm and battle of Austerlitz , and in 1808 went to Spain with Jean de Dieu Soult Marshal Soult . In 1815 , he supported Napoleon and opposed the House of Bourbon Bourbons . Consequently he was proscribed after the Bourbon restoration. But after several years of exile, he was allowed to return quietly to Paris in 1820. The original church structure was completed in 1847 but was destroyed in the disastrous fire of 1881 which leveled a significant portion of the city. The current church was built in 1884 out of seven types of Italian marble. Designed by architect Joseph Ferdinand Peachy in the Second Empire style , the church was inspired by the facade of the glise de la Sainte Trinit , Paris glise de la Sainte Trinit in Paris . It features a 240 ft spire, 36 stained glass windows, and dozens of statues and paintings among other ornate deccorations. The area was first settled by M tis families from St. Norbert, Manitoba and, in 1878, French Canadian families from the United States arrived in the area and purchased land. The Post Office opened in 1877 and a parish and Canadian National railway point were also part of the early development. The community was originally called Grosse Pointe. It became Mission de la Rivi re aux Prunes and received its present name from Archbishop Alexandre Antonin Tach Tach in 1872. It has since then been known as St. Jean Baptiste or St. Jean.
