The Buddha is depicted in the position of the Dhyana Mudra , the posture of meditation associated with his first Enlightenment, also called Nirvana. Whether the Buddha s Enlightenment was the experience technically called Samadhi , or some other phenomenon, may depend upon the philosophical allegiance of the believer. In the Dhyana Mudra the Buddha sits cross legged with his upturned palms placed one over the other on his lap. This position is universally known throughout the Buddhist world, and this statue is therefore one of the most typical pieces of Buddhist sculpture . It is not to be confused with the very similar Earth Touching Mudra, which depicts the simple action the Buddha took to fend off the illusions projected by Mara, who was desperate to prevent the Buddha from realizing that his, Mara s, projections, and with them the entire world, are an illusion. Sananda samadhi , also known as supreme bliss , or with ecstasy , is the third level of the four samadhis described in the Yoga sutra Yoga Sutra 1 17 by Patanjali . Sananda sa means with , ananda means joy, bliss. Historical descriptions In Sutra 1 17 Patanjali tells us that samprajnata samadhi comprises four stages Complete high consciousness samprajnata samadhi is that which is accompanied by vitarka reasoning , vicara reflection , sananda ecstasy , and sasmita a sense of I ness . Sananda is free from vitarka and vicara. This is joyous samadhi and it gives intense joy. In sananda the gross and the five elements are given up. There arises in the Yogi a peculiar perception in the form of intense joy. In this state the mind continues to function, but knowledge of any particular object slowly fades away and the yogi becomes aware of the inner consciousness only. He experiences supreme bliss. In sananda samadhi the yogi experiences a state of rapture or ecstasy, and the only thought in the mind is the wordless awareness of the feeling of I am in pleasure, I am happy. Modern descriptions According to Dr. Sarasvati Buhrman PhD, Mahavatar Babaji Babaji once explained that when people feel blissful sensations during sadhana , on a gross level the breath is equal in both nostrils, and on the subtle level prana pranic flow in ida and pingala nadis is balanced. This is called the sushumna breath because the residual prana of the sushuma, the kundalini , flows in sushumna nadi, causing sattva guna to dominate. It creates a feeling of peace. That peace is ananda. ZenBuddhism The Song of the Precious Mirror Samadhi zh t p Baojing sanmei ge w Pao ching San mei ke CJKV j H ky Zammai k also translated as Song of the Jeweled Mirror Samadhi and Sacred Mirror Samadhi is a Zen poem in Classical Chinese that appeared during the Song Dynasty . The work is often attributed to Dongshan Liangjie Japanese T zan Ry kan , the co founder of the Caodong S t branch of Zen Buddhism, although modern research suggest this is unlikely. The poem is first mentioned in Juefan Huihong s biographical compilation of 1119, the Chanlin sengbao zhuan Chronicle of the Sangha Treasure in the Groves of Chan , written over 200 years after Dongshan Liangjie s death. Huihong, however, does not attribute the poem to Dongshan. He writes instead that the poem was given to Dongshan by his teacher, Yunyan Tansheng . Huihong further speculates that Yunyan s teacher, Yaoshan Weiyan , probably entrusted it to him in turn. Huihong relates that he came upon the poem in 1108, when it was given to a scholar Zhu Yan by a monk, whom he does not identify. The scholar Morten Schl tter notes that the poem s provenience is doubtful given the way it came to Huihong, and furthermore the style differs substantially from works of the era that Huihong attributes it to. Located about six miles 10 km south of Ahmednagar , the samadhi structure itself was completed in August 1938, more than 30 years before Baba s death in January 1969. It had a door and window on the east side. In July of the same year, a pit four feet wide and six feet deep was dug in it, lined with stone and masonry and covered by wooden planks. It was referred to as the Khadda the Ditch or Pit Room, by the mandali . Later the tin was replaced by mud mortared stones and more windows were added. From August 16th Baba started using this crypt cabin mostly for staying in seclusion. Savikalpa sam dhi Sanskrit lang sa is one of the highest forms of minor state of samadhi . In Savikalpa samadhi, the human consciousness is dissolved and lost for a short period of time. Beyond the state of Savikalpa Samadhi, there are other stages of Samadhi like Nirvikalpa Samadhi and Sahaja Samadhi. In the state of savikalpa samadhi , the attention and the life force are switched off from the senses and are consciously kept identified with the ever joyous Spirit. In this state the soul is released from the ego consciousness and becomes aware of Spirit beyond creation. The soul is then able to absorb the fire of Spirit Wisdom that roasts or destroys the seeds of body bound inclinations. The soul as the meditator, its state of meditation, and the Spirit as the object of meditation all become one. The separate wave of the soul meditating in the ocean of Spirit becomes merged with the Spirit. The soul does not lose its identity, but only expands into Spirit. In savikalpa samadhi the mind is conscious only of the Spirit within it is not conscious of creation without the exterior world .
