The Cheetah Marketing Sound Sampler 1986 was an Analogue to Digital converter system that attached to the system bus connection of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computer. Its simple design included an audio preamplifier for use with microphones, an 8 bit analogue to digital converter and an audio output amplifier for impedance matching purposes. The software for the unit was written entirely in Z80 machine code and featured a menu driven interface and an ability to play back a recorded sound shifted over a two octave frequency range using the computer s rudimentary keyboard as a piano keyboard. Although Cheetah Marketing publicised the unit as suitable for home or professional use, the lack of polyphony and the capabilities of the software really limited the usefulness of the product to the low end of the amateur market. Accompanying the main software package, the designers Speedwell Software created a real time sound processing unit that contained a frequency shifter, sound chopper or Dalek voicebox effect, Echo, reverb and a very strange sound effect called a Bubbelizer that was a failed attempt at a phase shifter. The Cheetah Sound Sampler, although crude and cheap, was one of many such electronic devices that introduced home computer owners to the possibilities of digital recording and the principles of electronic music that was, at the time, still reserved for a relative few who had the resources to buy expensive professional and semi professional equipment. The Sound Sampler sold relatively few units due to stiff competition from contemporary manufacturers and the poor build quality of the product that was produced as cheaply as possible. The Roland MS 1 Digital Sampler was a compact, 16 bit digital audio sampler musical instrument Types phrase sampler produced by Roland Corporation Roland in 1995 as a straightforward, inexpensive, entry level sampler. Overview The MS 1 was what Roland refers to as a phrase sampler and featured eight rubber pads that triggered individual samples assigned to them. The eight pads were arranged into five banks for a total of 40 sampled sounds 16 sounds banks A & B with the built in flash memory and up to 24 banks C, D & E expanded with the insertion of a PCMCIA memory card . Without a card, only banks A & B could be used. Programming of the MS 1 was possible through the use of a small LCD display and menu driven settings entered with left and right directional buttons which increased or decreased numerical values and controlled a text editing cursor. Sample time depended on the sample rate quality that was selected during recording. The settings were simply called High , Standard, Long 1, or Long 2. The internal flash memory held approximately 20 seconds on the High setting, or nearly a minute on the Long 2 setting. Typically, Sandisk 2.5, 5 and 10 mega byte memory cards were used with the MS 1 which increased sampling time and expanded its capabilities. There were no built in audio effects, but samples could be pitch controlled, playback start and end points could be edited, samples could be truncated allowing the deletion of audio bits that were not desired, samples could be divided and the split parts assigned to separate pads, and samples could be looped and loop start and end points could be edited. It also featured MIDI in and out, but no thru. For recording audio, the MS 1 used left right RCA connector RCA jack audio inputs and two microphone jacks. The Automated Radioxenon Sampler Analyzer ARSA was designed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the late 1990s with funding and support from the U.S. Department of Energy . The ARSA system automatically collects and measures radioxenon from the air. The ARSA system continuously collects xenon from the air in batch mode, processing approximately 48 m sup 3 sup in an 8 hour period. The average amount of xenon collected in this period is approximately 2 cc.
