Due to a conflict with the Archbishop of Genoa , he moved to Rome in 1895, working at first as an assistant in the historical research section of the Vatican Library . In 1900 he began contributing to the newspaper La Voce della Verit , becoming its director in 1901, the same year in which he also became Professor of Church History at the seminary of the Diocese of Rome . In 1902 he was given a position in the Roman Curia , and in 1906 was promoted to the post of Undersecretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs , the forerunner of what is today the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State Holy See Secretariat of State . Monsignor Benigni proved to have special gifts for relations with the press. Beginning in 1907, he provided a daily news bulletin, La Corrispondenza di Roma , which became from 1909 to 1912 La Correspondance de Rome and in 1913 1914 Cahiers de Rome . This gave him influence over the contents of publications in many countries. Umberto Baldini November 9, 1921 August 16, 2006 was an art historian and specialist in the theory of art restoration . He earned a degree in art history with professor Mario Salmi , entered into service as inspector of the Soprintendenza of Florence , and in 1949 became director of the Gabinetto di Restauro . In this capacity he was tasked with managing the emergency of the 1966 Flood of the River Arno in Florence 1966 flood of Florence that damaged many masterpieces. The result of these interventions consecrated to the world the techniques and methodology of the so called Florentine school of restoration. In 1970 he became the first director of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure . From 1983 to 1987 he was the director of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro now the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro in Rome and, in these years, he led the restoration of the Brancacci Chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine di Firenze Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. Alternating landscape with figure painting in the 1920s, he received his first official recognition with the Prince Umberto Prize in 1927. His participation in the Venice Biennale began in 1928 with the 16th Esposizione Internazionale d Arte della Citt di Venezia. Involvement with the Novecento Italiano movement led to participation in their second group show in Milan in 1929. The influence of Chiarismo can also be seen in the gradual lightening of his palette. His first solo exhibition was held at the Galleria Bardi, Milan, in the same year. While the 1930s saw increased participation in exhibitions, including the Rome Quadrenniale and the Brera exhibitions at the national level, the art world showed less interest in his painting after World War II .
