Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 SanFranciscoBay Diablos were an American soccer team that played in SanFrancisco, California as a member of the USISL from 1993 to 1995. History Owner Mario Chavez coached the team during its inaugural season in 1993. In 1994, he brought in former Nigerian international Tony Igwe to coach. Igwe lasted only four games with the team losing all four games. Chavez, then struck a deal with Salvador Lopez to bring in the 1993 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Champions C.D. Mexico aka, El Farolito Soccer Club to take over the club and run the team. The team enjoyed immediate success and if not for a 18 point deduction in points for a rules violation, the club would have made their first and only playoff appearance. In 1995, Lopez withdrew his support and the cooperation between the two clubs ceased. The combined yards were the largest naval shipyard in the world, but the desired cost savings did not materialize, and the two yards reverted to separate existences in February 1970. The shipyard was used for radioactive testing when the United States was testing the atomic bomb. The site has since been contaminated. Now the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is a Superfund site, as designated by the Environmental Protection Agency EPA . It is the Navy s job to clean up the site to reasonable levels to those who live adjacent to the shipyard. The 1971 SanFranciscoBay oil spill occurred when two Standard Oil tankers, the Arizona Standard and the Oregon Standard , collided on January 19, 1971, in the SanFranciscoBay . The resulting 800,000 gallon spill threatened sensitive natural habitats both inside and outside the bay, including the Bolinas Lagoon , and contributed to the growth of activism against pollution, after thousands of bay area residents volunteered to clean up beaches and rescue oil soaked birds. A number of environmental organizations had their origins in the spill cleanup. ref cite news title After 30 years, tankers safer but spills still a threat url http www.berkeleydailyplanet.com issue 2001 01 19 article 3054?headline After 30 years tankers safer but spills still a threat work The Associated Press date 19 January 2001 accessdate 26 March 2012 ref ref cite web url http blog.bird rescue.org index.php 2011 01 remembering 1971 sanfranciscobay oil spill title International Bird Rescue Every Bird Matters Blog Archive Remembering the 1971 SanFranciscoBay oil spill author Jay Holcomb date 18 January 2011 accessdate 26 March 2012 ref ref cite news title Marin s biggest oil dumping nightmare came in 1971 author Nels Johnson url http www.marinij.com ci 7413576 newspaper Marin Independent Journal publisher MediaNews Group, Bay Area News Group date 9 November 2007 accessdate 26 March 2012 ref References reflist See also Cosco Busan oil spill List of oil spills John Francis environmentalist John Francis ...
